Jettly Movie: Director Ritesh Rana Interview On Humor, Suspense And Thriller Elements

When did the journey of Jettly begin?
Director Ritesh Rana: The story development started in 2020 during the COVID period along with writer Jayendra. We had planned this film since then, and finally began shooting last November. Now, we are ready for release.

Was Jettly initially planned as an intense thriller with a big star?
Director Ritesh Rana: We always wanted it to be a thriller with humor rather than a completely serious film. Since most of the story happens inside a flight, it was an experimental idea. Some people questioned whether such an experiment was needed at this time. Later, I felt Satya would be perfect for it. After Mathu Vadalara, I got the scope and confidence to make this film, and we tailored the character to suit him.

What was Satya’s reaction when you narrated the story?
Director Ritesh Rana: Initially, his character was that of a flight attendant. When I told him he would be the hero, he was surprised and felt it was risky. But after I explained the execution, he got very excited. His role has seriousness, humor, and suspense.

Why the title ‘Jettly’?
Director Ritesh Rana: There is an actor named Jet Li, and since the story happens inside a jet, we thought the title ‘Jettly’ would sound interesting and apt.

Who is the real hero — Satya or Vennela Kishore?
Director Ritesh Rana: You’ll have to watch the film to find out (laughs).

Tell us about the shooting journey.
Director Ritesh Rana: Around 80% of the film takes place inside a flight. We built a massive set including economy class, business class, cargo, and cockpit—all on a single floor. This is one of the toughest films I’ve made. The story unfolds during a journey from Dubai to Kochi, combining action, thrill, and humor.

What about Vennela Kishore’s role?
Director Ritesh Rana: He plays a very unique character who keeps solving Sudoku puzzles and writes film titles based on situations. It’s quite a quirky role.

Tell us about Riya Singha’s character.
Director Ritesh Rana: This is her Telugu debut, and she plays a special agent. It’s an interesting role, and she performed very well.

What role does Ajay play?
Director Ritesh Rana: Ajay plays a character named Prajapati, who is involved in a bank scam and is on the run. Bringing him back is a key part of the story.

How is your working equation with Satya?
Director Ritesh Rana: We actually have a “non-sync,” and that non-sync creates a great sync (laughs). We are different, and that difference works well.

How was your experience with producer Chiranjeevi (Cherry)?
Director Ritesh Rana: I have perfect sync with him. He always supports my experiments. Even when I changed plans from a big hero to Satya, he trusted me completely.

How is Kaala Bhairava’s music?
Director Ritesh Rana: My technical team has been with me since my first film. The film has one song, impactful background score, and some bit songs. The runtime is about 2 hours and 10 minutes.

Who influenced your comedy style?
Director Ritesh Rana: Many people. I love Crazy Mohan’s style of comedy. I also enjoy satire, sarcasm, and Hollywood comedy.

Is there a Chiranjeevi reference in the film?
Director Ritesh Rana: Yes, the film begins with a frame of Chiranjeevi. I usually include references to him in my films, and this one continues that trend.

Your promotions are quite unique.
Director Ritesh Rana: Promotions are very important these days. I plan them during the shooting stage itself, and we followed the same approach for this film.

Any challenging sequences?
Director Ritesh Rana: There are two major sequences that took nearly four months for CGI work. We shot them first and used the remaining time for post-production. They will look very stylish.

Is there scope for a sequel?
Director Ritesh Rana: Yes, the film has many interesting characters. If it works well, there is definitely scope for a sequel.

Your favorite genre?
Director Ritesh Rana: I love the horror genre the most. My next project will likely be a horror film, possibly with new actors.

All The Best!
Director Ritesh Rana: Thank you!
