Exclusive Interview: Priyamani Talks About Pay Disparity in Cinema and Her Experience as an Actress
How have you experienced pay disparity in the film industry?
Priyamani: "I’ve faced pay disparity many times, often earning less than my male co-stars. However, I’ve learned not to let it bother me anymore. I’ve come to understand my market value and know exactly what I deserve. I charge what I believe is fair, neither more nor less."
Do you think pay is directly related to market demand?
Priyamani: "Yes, absolutely. If you know your worth and ask for it, you will receive it. This is a personal experience of mine, not a complaint. It’s all about knowing what you bring to the table and standing firm on that."
Are there differences between the work culture in South and Hindi cinema?
Priyamani: "Yes, there are noticeable differences. In the South, if a shoot is scheduled for 8 am, it starts exactly at that time. However, in Hindi cinema, things often get delayed, and the shooting starts much later than the scheduled time."
How do you juggle your career across multiple film industries?
Priyamani: "I try to select roles that challenge me and help me grow as an actor. I’ve worked in multiple languages—from Telugu films like Yamadonga and Ragada to recent projects like Narappa, Virata Parvam, Custody, and Bhamakalapam 2. Each role is an opportunity to bring authenticity and depth to the character."
What advice would you give to upcoming actresses regarding salary negotiations?
Priyamani: "Know your worth and never sell yourself short. Your salary is a reflection of your talent and demand in the industry. Stand firm, negotiate with confidence, and always charge what you truly deserve."
What’s your perspective on gender pay equality in cinema?
Priyamani: "The industry has come a long way, but there’s still more progress to be made. I’m hopeful that with increasing awareness and transparency, women in cinema will start receiving fair and equal compensation for their talent."
