Iran War Powers Resolution Advances As Republicans Oppose Trump

Senate Iran War Vote Puts Trump’s Military Authority Under Pressure

The US Senate has moved forward with an Iran war powers resolution that seeks to limit President Donald Trump’s ability to continue military action against Iran without approval from Congress. The procedural vote passed 50-47, with four Republican senators joining most Democrats in support of the measure. Three Republican senators were absent.

Senate Vote Challenges Trump’s War Authority

The resolution, introduced by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, argues that Congress must decide before the US enters or continues a major conflict. Supporters say the Constitution gives Congress the power to declare war, while the president can only direct limited military action without approval.

The vote comes after earlier Republican efforts blocked similar war powers resolutions in the Senate and House. This time, Republican senators Rand Paul, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Bill Cassidy supported the measure. Democrat John Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote against it.

Resolution Still Faces Big Obstacles

Even after clearing the procedural stage, the resolution faces a difficult path. It must pass the full Senate, the Republican-led House, and survive a likely Trump veto. Under the 1973 War Powers Act, a president must seek congressional approval after 60 days of military action unless forces are withdrawn or an extension is justified.
