The West Bengal Bar Council results have delivered a major boost to the TMC after its Assembly setback. Where the Trinamool Congress retained control of the lawyers body by winning 15 of the 23 elected seats.
TMC Wins 15 of 23 seats in West Bengal Bar Council pollsMamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress has scored a commanding victory in the West Bengal Bar Council election, winning 15 of the 23 elected seats and retaining its influence over the statutory lawyers’ body.
The BJP secured three seats, while the Left Front also won three and the Congress took two. Of the five seats reserved for women, TMC candidates won four, with the remaining seat going to the Congress. The result gives the party a clear majority in the elected section of the council.
A total of 75 candidates contested the polls. TMC fielded 23 candidates, the BJP 22 and the Left Front 12, while 18 independents were also in the race. The Bar Council of India is expected to nominate two additional women members, taking the council’s final strength to 25.
TMC Victory offers boost after major Assembly election defeatThe result comes at a politically important moment for TMC following its heavy defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly election. Official Election Commission results showed the BJP winning 207 seats while TMC was reduced to 80, ending Mamata Banerjee’s long tenure in power.
The Bar Council result does not alter the balance of power in the state government, but it gives TMC a significant organisational victory after months of political setbacks. The contrast between the Assembly result and the lawyers’ body election suggests the party continues to command influence within sections of Bengal’s legal community.
The BJP, despite its Assembly landslide, retained only three seats in the Bar Council, the same number it held previously. Congress also retained two seats, while the Left Front slipped from four seats in the previous council to three.
TMC Candidates reportedly backed by Mamata BanerjeeThe winning TMC candidates were reportedly selected on recommendations linked to Mamata Banerjee, making the outcome particularly significant for the former Chief Minister as she works to rebuild the party following its electoral defeat.
Subhashis Chakraborty of the Trinamool lawyers’ cell registered the highest winning margin. Other prominent TMC winners included Baisanor Chatterjee, Ansar Mondal, Ashok Deb, Indranil Basu and Siddhartha Mukherjee.
Voting for the Bar Council election began on March 9, shortly before the West Bengal Assembly election campaign entered its decisive phase. Practising lawyers from district courts across the state participated in choosing representatives.
TMC Bar Council win signals continued organisational influenceThe result is being viewed within TMC as evidence that the party’s political and organisational network has not disappeared despite losing state power. The new council board is expected to be formed shortly, with TMC holding a comfortable numerical advantage.
For Mamata Banerjee, the victory offers a useful political talking point as the party attempts to recover from the Assembly defeat and strengthen its organisation outside the legislature.
However, a professional-body election cannot be directly compared with a statewide Assembly contest involving millions of voters. Its broader political significance will therefore depend on whether TMC can translate such institutional victories into renewed support among the wider electorate ahead of future elections.
