CM Vijay Delhi Visit: PM Modi Meeting Focuses On Mekedatu And Fishermen Issues

CM Vijay Raises Tamil Nadu Issues With PM Modi

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on May 27, 2026, during his first official visit to the national capital after assuming office. The meeting, which reportedly lasted around 20 minutes, focused on several important issues linked to Tamil Nadu’s rights, culture, farmers, and fishermen.

Tamil Nadu Issues Raised With PM Modi

During the meeting, Vijay raised the Tamil Thai Vazhthu issue and requested clarity on whether it can be sung at the beginning of state government events. He also thanked the Prime Minister for supporting the return of the historic Anaimangalam copper plates to India.

A key part of the discussion was Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu dam project across the Cauvery. Vijay said the project should not be permitted without the consent of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry, the co-basin states. He also conveyed that the announcement about the project had created concern among Tamil Nadu farmers.

Fishermen Arrests And Defence Projects

Vijay also raised the frequent arrest of Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. He said 12 incidents had been reported this year, with 58 fishermen still in custody and 266 fishing boats seized. He urged the Centre to take steps for the immediate release of the fishermen and their boats.

The Chief Minister also sought support for setting up DRDO-linked defence facilities, including the Centre for Airborne Systems and the AMCA Design and Development Centre, in Tamil Nadu. Vijay is also expected to meet senior Union ministers during his Delhi visit.
