Venkat K. Narayana Interview: Jana Nayagan Tributes Vijay’s Legacy

Venkat K. Narayana Interview: Jana Nayagan Tributes Vijay’s Legacy

Did you anticipate the release challenges faced by Jana Nayagan?
Venkat K. Narayana: We expected some challenges from the beginning. Vijay sir himself had told us that this would be his final film before entering politics full-time, so we knew there could be certain obstacles. We mainly anticipated issues related to securing theatres during the release. However, we never imagined the film would face delays, piracy concerns, legal proceedings and several unexpected hurdles. The movie was originally scheduled for a January release but is finally arriving on July 23. Looking at the positive side, the film is now releasing after Vijay sir became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, making it even more special for his fans.

You have achieved tremendous success in business. What inspired you to enter the film industry?
Venkat K. Narayana: I've loved cinema since childhood. Movies teach many valuable life lessons that textbooks cannot. Songs, stories and dialogues leave a lasting impact on people. One dialogue from Peddi that deeply inspired me was, "Why are we born just to live an ordinary life?" Cinema has the power to communicate such powerful thoughts to society. After fulfilling many of my business goals, entering the film industry became one of the dreams on my bucket list. I wanted to collaborate with people who inspired me.

You entered the film industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. How did that happen?
Venkat K. Narayana: COVID affected millions of people. During that difficult period, KVN launched the "Feed My City" initiative to provide meals to daily wage workers and families who had lost their livelihoods. We served food for nearly 45 days and reached lakhs of people. It remains one of the most satisfying experiences of our lives.
The pandemic also severely impacted the film industry. After interacting with many people from the industry, I realized how many films had stopped and how many workers had lost employment. That motivated me to contribute. We first entered film financing, then distribution. We distributed Rajamouli garu's RRR in Karnataka before eventually stepping into film production.

How did your association with Vijay begin?
Venkat K. Narayana: This is my first Tamil production. I already knew Vijay sir's manager. During the time of Leo, we had several discussions. Later, when I learned Vijay sir would be making another film after GOAT, I expressed my interest in producing it. I have always admired his films. Everything happened in just one meeting, and that's how our journey together began.

Was Bhagavanth Kesari the inspiration behind Jana Nayagan?
Venkat K. Narayana: Both Vijay sir and I loved Bhagavanth Kesari. We only drew inspiration from two specific scenes. The rest of the story is entirely original and unfolds in a completely different world. We openly discussed this with director Anil Ravipudi as well.
The trailer honestly reflects that inspiration without hiding it. But once audiences watch the complete film, they'll experience an entirely new story, fresh conflicts and emotional depth. Apart from the thread involving a young woman joining the armed forces, everything else is completely original. I request everyone to watch the film with an open mind.

Were you disappointed by the censor certification?
Venkat K. Narayana: Yes. The film promotes girl-child empowerment and social change. Bhagavanth Kesari even received a National Award. Since our film also carries an inspirational message, we initially expected a U/A certificate. Later, receiving an A certificate was disappointing because we wanted more families and younger audiences to experience the film together. However, we respect the censor board's decision.

How difficult was the release delay for you as a producer?
Venkat K. Narayana: Whenever a major film gets delayed, the impact is felt not only by the producer but by the entire film ecosystem. Financially and emotionally, delays affect everyone involved.
I always believe that great destinations often come with difficult journeys. Success is rarely easy. Every victory requires overcoming obstacles, and this film is no different.

Vijay is now the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Do you think that increases expectations for the film?
Venkat K. Narayana: Absolutely. Watching a film starring the sitting Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu is a once-in-a-generation experience. It is an unforgettable moment for audiences and fans alike. I believe this makes the release even more historic.

What was it like working with Vijay?
Venkat K. Narayana: Vijay sir is one of the most disciplined professionals I have ever worked with. He always completes his work on time and remains fully committed throughout the production. Working with him was an absolute pleasure, and his personality will stay with me forever.

What kind of experience can Vijay fans expect from Jana Nayagan?
Venkat K. Narayana: This film will give Vijay fans a truly unforgettable theatrical experience. We are planning a massive worldwide release across nearly 7,000 to 8,000 screens. Our intention is to celebrate Vijay sir's incredible cinematic journey and present the film as a heartfelt tribute to his legacy.

Is there any possibility of working with Vijay again?
Venkat K. Narayana: At present, Vijay sir is completely focused on serving the people. I don't believe he intends to return to films. However, if such an opportunity ever arises in the future, I would love to collaborate with him again.
He is one of those rare individuals whose personality leaves a lasting impression on everyone who meets him. He has also entrusted me with an important responsibility, and I am committed to fulfilling it with sincerity.

Can you tell us about your upcoming film with Chiranjeevi?
Venkat K. Narayana: I have admired Chiranjeevi garu since childhood. His films, songs and inspirational journey have influenced me greatly. I always wanted my first Telugu production with a superstar to be with him. Today, that dream has become a reality. The film is shaping up wonderfully, and I am extremely excited about it.

Any final message?
Venkat K. Narayana: Thank you. I sincerely hope audiences watch Jana Nayagan in theatres and experience the emotion, entertainment and message we have worked so hard to bring to the big screen. It is a film made with passion, and I believe it will remain a memorable tribute to Vijay sir's remarkable legacy.

All the best.
Venkat K. Narayana:
Thank you.
