Ahilya Bamroo Interview: Sing Geetham Is A Unique Film That Connects Universally

Ahilya Bamroo Interview: Sing Geetham Is A Unique Film That Connects Universally

Can you tell us about your background?
Ahilya Bamroo: I am from Puducherry. I grew up in an international community where people spoke languages like English, French and Bengali. I never planned to become an actor. I used to create content on Instagram, and Nag Ashwin saw my work there. He later told me about this film. I even gave my audition through Instagram.

This is a film set against a musical backdrop. I love singing and playing the guitar, so I felt this would be a good beginning for me in Telugu cinema. Getting selected for this project feels like a blessing. When I heard that Singeetham Srinivasa Rao was directing it, Nag Ashwin was producing it, and Vyjayanthi Movies was backing the project, I accepted it without a second thought.

How was the experience of working with Singeetham Srinivasa Rao?
Ahilya Bamroo: He is an amazing director. He has made so many great films, and his sense of humour is also wonderful. I feel lucky to have worked under his direction.

Most of Singeetham sir’s films were ahead of their time, and Sing Geetham is also one such film. This is a concept that has not been tried in Indian cinema before. Even at the age of 94, he is making a film with such a modern thought process, and that is truly inspiring.

How did you feel on the first day of the shoot?
Ahilya Bamroo: I was very nervous because I did not know Telugu. But the entire team made me feel like family. Before the film began, I started learning Telugu online, and that training helped me a lot. Now, I can speak a little Telugu.

How is your character in the film?
Ahilya Bamroo: Everyone knows how beautifully Singeetham sir writes his characters. The women in his films are usually strong and independent. My character in Sing Geetham is also very fresh and different.

This is not a regular classical heroine role. My character knows clearly what she wants and has a strong personality. Another interesting thing is that the villain role in the film is also played by a woman, which is very rare. The story has a universal appeal. From children to elders, everyone can connect with and enjoy this film.

What can you say about Devi Sri Prasad’s music?
Ahilya Bamroo: The songs “Emaindhi Emaindhi” and “Hello Basu” have already received a very good response from the audience. Devi Sri Prasad has given very special music for this film.

He is a genius music director, and the songs in Sing Geetham are beautiful and unique. Music plays a very important role in this movie.

What kind of film is Sing Geetham going to be?
Ahilya Bamroo: Sing Geetham belongs to a very new genre. I believe audiences have not seen a film like this before. Everyone should watch it in theatres on June 11 and enjoy the experience.

How was Nag Ashwin’s support for the film?
Ahilya Bamroo: Nag Ashwin’s involvement was wonderful. He is a big admirer of Singeetham sir, and his taste can also be seen in this film.

He used to speak with every actor and give valuable suggestions. The direction was completely handled by Singeetham sir, but Nag Ashwin looked after everything needed to make the film better. He also played an important role in the creative process.

How was it working with the producers?
Ahilya Bamroo: Working with prestigious banners like Vyjayanthi Movies and Swapna Cinema is a big opportunity. Priyanka and Swapna are very friendly and supportive. They always think about bringing new kinds of stories to the audience. I am very happy to be part of this film with them.

What films have you done before this?
Ahilya Bamroo: I worked in a Bollywood film directed by Shoojit Sircar, starring Abhishek Bachchan. Sing Geetham is my second film, and it is my first Telugu movie. I really like South India. Telugu audiences love cinema deeply, and I am very happy to work in an industry with such passionate viewers.

What is your dream role?
Ahilya Bamroo:
I love action films. In the future, I would like to do such roles.

Who is your favourite Telugu hero?
Ahilya Bamroo: I like Mahesh Babu a lot. He is a brilliant actor.

Are you working on any new films now?
Ahilya Bamroo: I am currently working on a Tamil film.

All the best for the film.
Ahilya Bamroo: Thank you.
