Shiva Balaji Exclusive Interview About "Kannappa" and His Upcoming Projects

Shiva Balaji Exclusive Interview About

How did you come to be a part of Kannappa?
The journey began casually over lunch with Mohan Babu garu and Vishnu. Initially, Vishnu didn’t think there was a significant role for me, but Mohan Babu garu insisted, and within no time, I was offered the role of Kumaradeva Sastry, the son of Mahadeva Sastry, portrayed by Mohan Babu garu himself.

What kind of preparation did you go through for your character?
There wasn’t much external reference required. Since my character was Mohan Babu garu's son, I focused on mirroring his strict nature and emotional traits, especially his aversion to being touched, which added a layer of emotional depth to my character.

Can you elaborate on your role in Kannappa?
I play the role of Kumaradeva Sastry, a supporting yet impactful character. My character is not allowed to access the sacred Vayu Lingam, which ties into the film's broader narrative. My role shares significant screen time with Mohan Babu garu, adding weight to the story.

Why have you been so selective with your film choices lately?
I’ve become more careful in choosing my roles. I want to work on projects that resonate with me and offer strong acting opportunities. If a script doesn’t connect with me emotionally, I tend to pass on it.

What did you think of Kannappa after watching it?
I’ve seen the film, and it truly blew me away. The emotional depth, particularly in the second half, was something that stayed with me long after the movie ended.

How would you describe Prabhas' role in Kannappa?
Prabhas' role is significant, even though he’s only on screen for about 40 minutes. His presence is felt deeply, and his scenes are engaging, thanks to Vishnu’s excellent writing and execution of the role.

Tell us about the other major characters in the film
Every character in Kannappa has its place in the narrative. The entry of Mohanlal brings a new twist, and Prabhas' role keeps the story moving forward. Akshay Kumar, portraying Lord Shiva, delivers a performance that’s both powerful and simple, leaving a lasting impact.

How does Kannappa explore its devotional theme?
The film goes beyond being just a movie – it’s a spiritual journey that will leave you with goosebumps. The devotional aspects are portrayed so effectively that it becomes more than just a cinematic experience.

How was working with Mohan Babu garu off-screen?
Mohan Babu garu is very warm, caring, and treats everyone like family. Over time, I’ve grown closer to Vishnu, especially during the MAA elections, though we had met before.

Was Mohan Babu garu the main reason you took on the role?
It took me two days to make up my mind. I asked Vishnu if I was being pushed into the role, and he assured me it was my decision. I’m glad I said yes, as it’s a role I would have regretted missing.

Did you contribute to the production of Kannappa?
Yes, I was involved in some behind-the-scenes aspects. I even brought along a chef to help with food arrangements, ensuring the team was well taken care of during the shoot.

There were rumors about Mohan Babu purchasing 7000 acres in New Zealand. Is that true?
That was just a joke! The land was leased in Rotorua, New Zealand, for the shoot. We also shot parts of the film in Wanaka, South Island.

With OTT platforms on the rise, are you open to working in digital content?
Absolutely! I’m planning to return to OTT with Recce 2 soon after a short break from digital content.

What’s your view on the evolution of Bigg Boss?
I’m not a big fan of the current format. When I participated, the show felt more genuine, but now it seems a bit too pre-designed. Still, it did help me build a strong fan base.

How was it collaborating with director Mukesh Kumar Singh?
Mukesh Kumar Singh is a very polite and passionate director who enjoys history and traveling. He handled Kannappa very well, and his collaboration with Vishnu made the film special.

How would you describe your relationship with Vishnu?
Vishnu is a cool and down-to-earth person, far different from his social media persona. On set, he paid great attention to every little detail, ensuring the production was perfect.

What’s your take on social media influencers and their impact?
I believe influencers have contributed to spreading negativity, and that affects both celebrities and regular people. It's a double-edged sword.

Were there any objectionable scenes in Kannappa?
No, there weren’t any truly objectionable scenes. However, out of respect for the audience, we removed some dialogues to avoid any potential controversy.

How was Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of Lord Shiva?
Initially, Prabhas was considered for the role of Lord Shiva, but Akshay Kumar truly embodied the character. He brought a divine presence to the role and did full justice to it.

What’s next for you after Kannappa?
I’m currently working on a thriller, which is being produced by Mohan Babu garu and directed by a Tamil filmmaker. More details will be shared soon!
