Exclusive Interview with Kriti Shetty on Love Insurance Company and Her Acting Journey
How did you feel when Vignesh Shivan told you the story of Love Insurance Company?
Kriti Shetty: After Uppena, I didn’t get a chance to do a full-length love story. This film gave me the opportunity to explore a fresh and relatable romantic narrative. The story felt very personal to me, as it addresses the current reliance on social media and technology. The character I portray is very connected to today’s generation, and the film’s futuristic 2040 setting adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, but the emotions and themes are something everyone can connect with. It’s a fun commercial film with a great love story.
Do you also love your phone?
Kriti Shetty: When I’m working, I avoid touching my phone at all. However, when I’m free, I use it in a balanced way. Lately, I’ve gotten a bit more into using my phone. It’s a great tool for connecting with my fans. While I don’t really care much about likes and shares, I now use social media to stay connected with my fans.
Do you have a special connection with your character in Love Insurance Company?
Kriti Shetty: Yes, I can definitely relate to the character. In today’s world, while we can live without money, living without a phone is difficult. That’s exactly what my character is going through in the film. It’s about the dependency on phones and social media in modern relationships. While the film has a futuristic concept, it deals with emotions and relationships that are very much grounded in reality.
What is your relationship with Nayanthara, who produced the film?
Kriti Shetty: Working with Nayanthara was amazing. On-screen, she plays a boss-lady character, but off-screen, she is extremely sweet and caring. Throughout the shoot, she made sure everyone was comfortable. I even sought her advice on life, and she gave me great guidance. She also shared some valuable career tips with me. Our bond grew stronger during the making of this film, and it was a great learning experience.
Since Love Insurance Company is a futuristic love story, do you have any thoughts on old-school versus futuristic love stories?
Kriti Shetty: Personally, I believe in old-school love stories. Movies like Sitaramam and 96 are my favorites because they capture the innocence and joy of love. There’s something beautiful about the simplicity and purity in those stories. I find it hard to relate to the modern way of love as portrayed in today’s generation. The simplicity of old-school love holds a special place in my heart.
Is it possible that something like a 'love insurance' could exist in the future?
Kriti Shetty: That’s an interesting thought. In the movie, everything is insured, even the body, and we explore the idea that love could eventually be treated as an insurance too. It’s definitely a fun and intriguing concept, and the way it’s presented in the film makes it seem like something that could exist in the future.
What was the most challenging part of playing your character in Love Insurance Company?
Kriti Shetty: The most challenging part was portraying a character that’s very different from anything I’ve done before. My character doesn’t express much and spends a lot of time looking at her phone. Her expressions are almost robotic, and she communicates through her phone rather than face-to-face interactions. This was new for me and very challenging, but it was also a great learning experience.
What do you think of working with Pradeep Rangnathan, the lead actor in Love Insurance Company?
Kriti Shetty: Pradeep Rangnathan is such a sweet person. He observes everything around him and is always smiling. His judgment is spot-on, and I’ve learned so much from him. It was a pleasure working with him, and I think he brings a special charm to the film.
You've been doing a lot of Tamil films lately. What made you lean towards Tamil cinema?
Kriti Shetty: Honestly, it wasn’t planned. Tamil offers just kept coming my way, and the stories they presented were really exciting. I’ve always had a special connection with Telugu audiences, and I want to give them the best films. I took this time to learn and grow as an actress. I also took acting lessons, learned fight choreography, and even explored classical dance. I always try to improve myself whenever I can.
Can you tell us about your upcoming projects?
Kriti Shetty: I’m excited to be working on a project with Anil Ravipudi in Telugu. Additionally, I’m in discussions for another film in Tamil. There’s a lot to look forward to, and I’m really thrilled about the direction my career is taking.
All the Best!
Kriti Shetty: Thank You.
