Karnataka MLC Results: BJP-JD(S) Sweep 4 Seats, Congress Loses

Karnataka MLC Results: Opposition Wins All Four Seats

The BJP-JD(S) alliance secured a clean sweep in Karnataka’s four Legislative Council constituencies, leaving Congress without a victory in the October 23 elections. BJP retained North-East Teachers’, South-East Graduates’ and West Graduates’, while JD(S) took Bengaluru Teachers’ from the ruling party.

Results for the two teachers’ constituencies were declared on Tuesday. Counting in the graduates’ constituencies continued overnight before the remaining outcomes emerged on Wednesday. Voting was conducted using ballot papers.

Bengaluru Teachers Seat: Ranganath Defeats Puttanna

JD(S) candidate A P Ranganath, supported by BJP, defeated sitting Congress MLC Puttanna by 908 votes in Bengaluru Teachers’. Ranganath secured 10,810 votes against Puttanna’s 9,902.

The victory gave JD(S) a seat previously held by Congress and provided a notable result for the opposition alliance. The constituency was closely watched as a test of coordination between BJP and JD(S), including their ability to mobilise support behind a common candidate.

BJP Retains Three Seats: Winners and Vote Margins

In North-East Teachers’, BJP’s Shashil G Namoshi defeated Congress candidate Sharanappa Mattur by 3,297 votes. Namoshi received 15,596 votes, while Mattur secured 12,299. It marked Namoshi’s fifth victory from the constituency, according to party sources. BJP candidate K M Suresh won South-East Graduates’, defeating Congress nominee Shashi Hulikunte Mutt by 23,098 votes.

In West Graduates’, sitting BJP MLC S V Sankanur defeated Congress candidate Mohan Limbikai by 9,323 votes. Sankanur secured 33,711 votes against Limbikai’s 24,388. Together, these victories enabled BJP to retain all three seats it had defended.

Congress Setback: What the Results Mean Politically

Congress entered the contest seeking to defend Bengaluru Teachers’ and expand its presence in the other constituencies. Instead, the party lost its lone seat among the four contested segments.

The outcome strengthens the opposition alliance’s political position and raises questions for Congress about its support among the teachers and graduates voting in these constituencies. It also gives BJP and JD(S) a successful electoral outcome around which to demonstrate alliance coordination.

However, these Legislative Council results do not determine the Congress government’s Assembly majority. The sweep is therefore a political setback for the ruling party, without an immediate bearing on the government’s stability.
