Suvendu Adhikari Named West Bengal CM After BJP’s Historic Win
The Bharatiya Janata Party has officially chosen Suvendu Adhikari as the next Chief Minister of West Bengal, marking a historic political shift following the party’s electoral victory. The announcement was made in Kolkata during the BJP legislature party meeting attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Adhikari was elected as the BJP legislative party leader and is scheduled to take oath as Chief Minister at 11 am on Saturday at the Brigade Parade Ground. Several political leaders, industrialists, and public figures are expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
The decision followed internal discussions within the BJP regarding its chief ministerial candidate after the Assembly election results. Adhikari emerged as the frontrunner after securing key victories in Nandigram and Bhabanipur, including a high-profile contest against Mamata Banerjee.
State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya is reported to have proposed Adhikari’s name during the legislature party meeting, which was subsequently endorsed by the leadership. Party leaders described the move as a landmark moment in West Bengal’s political landscape.
Sources also indicated that the new government may appoint two Deputy Chief Ministers, including a woman leader, as part of its administrative structure. Preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are underway, with heightened security arrangements across Kolkata.
