Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Seeks Permanent Cap Of 543 Lok Sabha Seats
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bring Constitutional amendments that would permanently fix the strength of the Lok Sabha at 543 members. The request follows a resolution passed by the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly raising concerns over the possible impact of future delimitation on the representation of southern states.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Vijay asked the Centre to retain not only the total number of Lok Sabha seats but also the current state-wise distribution. The Tamil Nadu government argues that states which successfully controlled population growth should not lose political representation when constituencies are redrawn using newer population data.
The Assembly resolution said any change in the present allocation could reduce the representation of states that performed well in population control, healthcare, economic development and public welfare. Tamil Nadu has cited its own past experience, noting that its Lok Sabha strength was reduced from 41 to 39 seats in 1967.
Tamil Nadu Delimitation Concerns Focus On Southern States
The debate centres on how Lok Sabha constituencies could be redistributed after future Census figures are considered. Tamil Nadu has expressed concern that applying population-based calculations could benefit states with faster population growth while reducing the relative representation of several southern states.
The resolution called for the current 543-member strength of the Lok Sabha to be made permanent and for the number of seats allotted to each state to remain unchanged. Vijay requested the Prime Minister to consider the Assembly’s position and introduce the necessary Constitutional changes.
The state government maintains that changing the existing formula based on post-1971 population figures could create a long-term imbalance in federal representation. The issue has become increasingly significant as states debate how population, development and political representation should be balanced in any future delimitation exercise.
Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Pushes For 33% Women’s Reservation
Vijay also urged the Centre to ensure 33 per cent reservation for women in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and subsequent Assembly elections. The Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution called for the women’s quota to be implemented without being delayed by the delimitation process.
The Chief Minister’s letter therefore places three major demands before the Centre: permanently retaining the Lok Sabha strength at 543, maintaining the existing allocation of seats among states and ensuring one-third reservation for women in parliamentary and Assembly elections.
The demands are expected to add momentum to the national debate over delimitation, federal representation and women’s political participation. Tamil Nadu has made it clear that it wants safeguards before any redistribution of parliamentary seats is undertaken following fresh Census data.
