Congress Picks VD Satheesan As Kerala CM Despite MLA Support For KC Venugopal
Public Sentiment And Alliance Support Tilted Decision In Satheesan’s Favour
The Congress party finally announced VD Satheesan as the next Chief Minister of Kerala after nearly ten days of intense discussions, internal lobbying, and leadership meetings in Thiruvananthapuram and Delhi. Despite reports suggesting that many Congress MLAs supported senior leader KC Venugopal, the party high command chose Satheesan, believing he had stronger public support and better political appeal ahead of future electoral battles.
Party insiders said the decision reflected Rahul Gandhi’s leadership pattern of favouring leaders with stronger grassroots connections over organisational influence. Similar choices were seen earlier in Karnataka and Rajasthan. Satheesan, who served as Leader of the Opposition after the Congress defeat in 2021, was widely seen as the face of the party’s revival in Kerala.
Cadre Support And UDF Allies Backed Satheesan
Congress workers across Kerala reportedly rallied behind Satheesan in the days leading up to the announcement. Posters warning against sidelining him appeared in several districts, reflecting strong cadre sentiment. Leaders within the party believed ignoring this support could have negatively affected worker morale and the Congress's image after its electoral victory.
Support from United Democratic Front (UDF) allies also strengthened Satheesan’s position. The Indian Union Muslim League, one of the largest UDF allies, openly backed his candidature. Other alliance partners were also believed to favour him over KC Venugopal and Ramesh Chennithala.
Congress Focused On Public Image And Future Politics
Congress leadership reportedly wanted to move beyond traditional factional politics in Kerala by selecting Satheesan, who is not strongly associated with the state’s dominant party groups. Leaders also believed appointing Venugopal, a Delhi-based organisational figure who did not contest the Assembly election, could trigger criticism over “high-command politics”.
Venugopal currently serves as a Member of Parliament, and appointing him as Chief Minister would have required a bypoll, creating further political complications. Ultimately, the Congress leadership prioritised public mood, alliance chemistry, and long-term political messaging before confirming VD Satheesan as Kerala’s next Chief Minister.
