Kerala Begins Priyadarshini Free Bus Travel Scheme For Women

Kerala has started the Priyadarshini free bus travel scheme to help women, students, daily workers and transgender persons reduce their regular transport expenses from June 15.

The scheme allows eligible passengers to travel free of cost on selected KSRTC ordinary bus services. The government has introduced the move as a welfare step aimed at improving public transport access and supporting daily mobility across the state.

Free Travel Facility On KSRTC Ordinary Services

In the first phase, the Priyadarshini scheme will be available on KSRTC ordinary buses. Women of all age groups and transgender persons can use the facility without income-based restrictions.

The rollout is expected to be reviewed closely to understand passenger response, route demand and the financial impact on KSRTC.

Scheme To Help Students And Daily Workers

The free travel facility is expected to benefit women students, office-goers, daily wage workers and low-income commuters who depend on public transport for everyday travel.

For many passengers, the scheme could reduce monthly travel costs and make it easier to reach schools, colleges, workplaces, hospitals, markets and other essential services.

Government Plans Support For KSRTC

The scheme may add financial pressure on KSRTC, which is already facing operational challenges. However, the Kerala government has said it will compensate the corporation for the revenue loss caused by the free travel benefit.

Officials are also expected to monitor service availability on important routes as passenger movement increases under the scheme.

Private Bus Operators Watch Rollout

Private bus operators have raised concerns about the possible impact of the scheme, especially on routes where private buses and KSRTC services operate together.

The government is likely to assess feedback from passengers, KSRTC and transport stakeholders after the scheme is implemented.

Public Welfare Focus In Kerala Transport

The Priyadarshini scheme is being seen as a public welfare measure focused on women’s mobility, affordable travel and better access to public transport.

With the scheme beginning on ordinary KSRTC services, the coming weeks will show how effectively it supports daily commuters across Kerala.
