Cyber Attacks Hit Russia, Ukraine Alert Apps As Kherson Truce Ends

Cyber Attacks Target Warning Apps

Russia and Ukraine have disclosed cyberattacks targeting emergency warning applications as a temporary ceasefire in the Kherson region came to an end.

Russia’s emergencies ministry said its public alert app faced a massive cyberattack that allowed hackers to distribute false information. The application warns residents about incoming drones and other threats. Moscow did not immediately identify those responsible.

Earlier, Ukraine’s air force said its Air Alarm application had suffered suspected hostile interference after false radiation warnings appeared. Officials clarified that there was no radiation threat, while air force spokesman Yuriy Ignat confirmed the hack to AFP.

Ukraine’s strategic communications centre, SPRAVDI, blamed Russia for the intrusion. The available information did not establish a common perpetrator behind both attacks.

Kherson Truce Ends After Humanitarian Pause

The regional ceasefire ran from October 27 to November 1, according to Ukraine’s Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, Dmytro Lubinets. Kyiv said Russia declined an extension.

The pause, described by AFP as having been brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump, enabled a humanitarian mission to Russian-occupied Oleshky. Lubinets called it an important step in humanitarian cooperation.

For residents, the temporary calm offered time to complete everyday tasks. Kherson governor Oleksandr Prokudin urged people to remain vigilant and respond promptly to attack warnings as the ceasefire ended.

Renewed Fighting And Energy Strikes

Strikes continued elsewhere despite the regional pause. Russia said a drone hit an industrial facility east of Moscow, while Ukrainian media identified the target as the Kstovo oil refinery.

Ukraine’s energy ministry also announced fresh power outages following Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, including disruptions in Kyiv.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine could halt attacks on Russian refineries if Russia stopped striking Ukrainian energy facilities. He also proposed the supply of Patriot interceptor missiles as an alternative means of strengthening Ukraine’s defences.

A Ukrainian military officer, speaking anonymously to AFP, expressed concern that Russian forces had used the pause to reinforce positions and move ammunition. These claims were attributed to the officer.

Public Warning Systems Face Pressure

The app breaches added uncertainty at a moment when civilians depended on reliable alerts. False messages can undermine confidence in systems intended to provide timely warnings of attacks.

US-mediated negotiations were expected to resume in November, according to the article. Meanwhile, the end of the Kherson pause left residents facing renewed security concerns alongside disrupted electricity supplies and compromised warning applications.
