Alpha Review: Alia Bhatt Shines In An Uneven Spy Thriller

Alpha Review: Alia Bhatt Shines In An Uneven Spy Thriller

Plot:

The story follows Sita, played by Alia Bhatt, who is kidnapped as a child and trained under a secret “Alpha” programme. Years later, she becomes a skilled assassin and begins a revenge mission against the people who turned her into a weapon. Her mission takes unexpected turns as personal trauma, family secrets and spy operations come together. The film focuses on whether Sita can complete her mission while facing emotional conflicts, betrayal and dangerous enemies.

Performances:

Alia Bhatt is the strongest part of Alpha. She looks convincing in the action scenes and carries the physicality of the role with confidence. Sharvari also performs well as Durga and brings energy to her portions. The female-led action setup works whenever the film allows both characters to take charge.

Anil Kapoor gets a routine RAW chief role and mainly depends on dialogue-heavy scenes. Bobby Deol looks stylish as the antagonist, but the writing does not give him enough depth. Hrithik Roshan’s cameo is designed for fan excitement, but it does not add much value to the main story.

Technical Aspects:

The action choreography is one of the better aspects of the film. Alia’s fight sequences are staged well and give the film some strong moments. Director Shiv Rawail shows promise in handling the action and spy-universe setup. The film looks stylish in parts, and the scale is visible. However, the screenplay is inconsistent. The film moves between spy thriller and family melodrama too often, which weakens the tension.

Music:

The background score supports the action portions and adds energy to a few key scenes. However, the music does not become a major highlight. A stronger and more memorable score could have helped the film create better impact within the Spy Universe.

Editing:

The editing is uneven. The action portions move well, but the emotional scenes stretch the runtime. Several melodramatic portions could have been trimmed to make the film sharper and more thrilling. The film would have worked better with tighter pacing and fewer unnecessary detours.

Positives:

  • Alia Bhatt’s strong action performance
  • Female-led spy thriller setup
  • Well-mounted action sequences
  • Sharvari’s energetic screen presence
  • No forced romantic track
  • Stylish spy-universe presentation
  • Some interesting twists

Negatives:

  • Too much family melodrama
  • Uneven screenplay
  • Bobby Deol’s villain role lacks depth
  • Hrithik Roshan cameo feels unnecessary
  • Sharvari’s glamour portions feel forced
  • Emotional scenes slow down the film
  • Twists become tiring after a point

Analysis:

Alpha has an exciting idea at its core. A female-led spy thriller within the YRF Spy Universe had strong potential, especially with Alia Bhatt leading the film. The film works best when Sita is on a mission. The action blocks are engaging, and Alia’s commitment makes those scenes believable. The problem begins when the film moves away from action and enters heavy emotional drama. The dead mother angle, stolen childhood, family guilt and sisterhood emotions are repeatedly pushed into the narrative.

Instead of building a sharp spy thriller, the film often tries too hard to create emotional weight. This affects the pace and reduces the thrill. The film also depends on too many twists. A few of them work, but after a point, the screenplay feels more interested in shock value than strong storytelling.

Still, Alpha is not without merit. Alia Bhatt holds the film together, and the idea of women leading a major spy action film is refreshing. But the film needed better writing, stronger villains and a tighter screenplay to become truly powerful. Overall, Alpha is a watchable action drama powered by Alia Bhatt, but it falls short of becoming a memorable spy thriller.

Bottomline: Alia Shines

Rating: 2.5/5
