New Hindi Movie Review: O’ Romeo

New Hindi Movie Review: O’ Romeo

Plot

O’ Romeo follows Romeo Avtar, also known as Ustra, a volatile gangster secretly working as an aide to the Intelligence Bureau. Feared across the city, he operates in the shadows of crime lord Jamal, navigating loyalty, revenge, and inner conflict. His violent life takes an emotional turn when Afsha enters his world. Their relationship becomes the emotional center, forcing Romeo to confront his brutal identity. The film attempts to merge gangster drama with tragic romance, exploring love, sacrifice, and redemption.

Overview

Director Vishal Bhardwaj reunites with Shahid Kapoor after acclaimed films like Haider and Kaminey. The film carries Bhardwaj’s signature poetic storytelling and atmospheric tone. While the first half delivers gripping gangster drama, the second half loses focus as the romantic narrative lacks emotional depth. The film struggles to balance its dual identity as both a crime epic and tragic love story.

Performances

Shahid Kapoor delivers a powerful and intense performance as Romeo/Ustra. His screen presence is commanding, and he convincingly portrays emotional vulnerability beneath violent rage. Triptii Dimri brings subtle intensity to Afsha, though limited character development weakens her impact. Avinash Tiwary as Jamal lacks the threatening presence expected from a crime lord. Supporting actors including Vikrant Massey, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Nana Patekar remain underutilized.

Technical Aspects

The cinematography is visually stunning, featuring stylized frames and atmospheric storytelling. The Spain sequences and dramatic visual imagery add cinematic depth. However, the screenplay lacks consistency, with uneven pacing and abrupt emotional transitions. The climax feels visually ambitious but emotionally distant.

Music

Vishal Bhardwaj’s music complements the film’s poetic tone. The songs are atmospheric and meaningful but excessive in number. Some musical sequences slow narrative momentum rather than strengthening emotional impact.

Editing

Editing remains a major weakness due to the film’s excessive runtime. Several scenes feel prolonged, weakening narrative tension. Tighter editing could have improved pacing and emotional engagement significantly.

Positives

  • Shahid Kapoor’s powerful performance
  • Visually rich cinematography
  • Strong atmospheric storytelling
  • Engaging and intense first half

Negatives

  • Inconsistent and uneven screenplay
  • Weak emotional depth in romance
  • Underdeveloped antagonist character
  • Excessive runtime affecting pacing
  • Lack of strong emotional payoff

Analysis

O’ Romeo succeeds in creating a visually poetic gangster world but struggles with narrative balance. The film prioritizes atmosphere and symbolism over cohesive storytelling. While Shahid Kapoor’s performance anchors the film, the emotional core lacks sufficient development. The film remains visually impressive but emotionally inconsistent.

Bottomline: Visual Brilliance
