Heavy rain caused widespread waterlogging across Delhi and parts of the National Capital Region on Monday morning, slowing traffic on key roads and disrupting travel to Indira Gandhi International Airport.
At the time of the report, flight-tracking data showed 18 cancellations and 166 delays at Delhi airport. The figures may change as airlines update their operating schedules.
Delhi Heavy Rain Waterlogging Disrupts Major Roads
A fresh spell of monsoon rain left several important roads and junctions in Delhi waterlogged, creating long traffic delays for office-goers and other commuters. Vehicles were seen moving slowly through accumulated water in several parts of the capital.
Waterlogging was reported near Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, AIIMS, Ashoka Road and the Supreme Court area. Traffic was also affected around Baba Kharak Singh Marg near Connaught Place, where rainwater slowed vehicle movement.
Other locations that received heavy showers included Parliament Street, ITO, RK Puram and Ferozeshah Road. The disruption extended beyond Delhi, with parts of Gurugram, Faridabad and Noida also experiencing wet weather and difficult road conditions.
Commuters were advised to allow extra travel time, avoid known waterlogging points where possible and follow traffic-police updates. Waterlogging can change rapidly during intense rainfall, especially at underpasses, flyovers and low-lying stretches.
Delhi Airport Flight Cancellations And Delays Reported
Heavy rain also affected flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport. At the time of the update, flight-tracking platform Flightradar24 showed that 18 flights had been cancelled and 166 were delayed.
Flight disruption numbers are dynamic and can change through the day depending on weather conditions, aircraft rotation, runway operations and airline decisions. Passengers travelling from Delhi airport should check their flight status directly with the airline before leaving for the terminal.
The previous day had already seen significant operational disruption, with several flights cancelled, diverted or delayed as intense rain affected the Delhi-NCR region. Continued showers can extend turnaround times and create a chain effect across domestic and international schedules.
Passengers are also advised to factor in slower road travel to the airport. Waterlogged roads and traffic congestion may add considerably to journey times, even if a flight remains on schedule.
IMD Delhi Weather Forecast Calls For Rain And Thunderstorms
The India Meteorological Department forecast rain and thunderstorms for Delhi, with the possibility of moderate rain at many places and heavier showers at isolated locations. Lightning and gusty winds were also part of the broader weather outlook.
Weather conditions in the capital have been influenced by a western disturbance interacting with a lower-level trough extending from the low-pressure area over Gangetic West Bengal toward southwest Uttar Pradesh, according to the report.
The latest IMD city forecast advises residents to remain alert during thunderstorms, avoid open spaces during lightning activity and take precautions against sudden water accumulation. Drivers should avoid driving through deeply flooded roads because water depth may be difficult to judge.
Delhi Rainfall Above Normal Adds To Monsoon Pressure
Delhi’s cumulative rainfall has remained above normal at several weather stations this month. Till August 24, Safdarjung recorded 246.2 mm against a normal 191.1 mm, while Palam received 227.2 mm against its seasonal benchmark.
Lodi Road, Ridge and Ayanagar also recorded above-normal rain, adding to pressure on roads, drains and low-lying areas. Repeated spells of rain can worsen waterlogging when drainage systems have limited time to clear accumulated water.
