Indian Man Stabbed at Utah Mall in Alleged Anti-Muslim Attack

An Indian man was stabbed more than 15 times at a Utah mall in what authorities believe was a targeted, religiously motivated attack. The victim, identified as Hyderabad resident Syed Sohailuddin, remains hospitalised after undergoing multiple surgeries.

The attack took place on Monday afternoon at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, near Salt Lake City. Police arrested 48-year-old Peter Michael Larsen on suspicion of attempted murder and carrying a prohibited dangerous weapon.

What Happened at Valley Fair Mall?

Sohailuddin was working at a kiosk inside the shopping centre when the suspect allegedly approached him and began asking questions about his identity, country of origin, and religion.

According to accounts shared by the victim’s friends and community representatives, the suspect first asked Sohailuddin where he was from. After learning that he was from India, he reportedly asked whether he was Muslim.

The attacker then indicated that he wanted a bottle of water. When Sohailuddin turned to retrieve it, the suspect allegedly pulled out a knife and repeatedly attacked him. Police officers arriving at the mall found the victim bleeding from numerous stab wounds.

Sohailuddin was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Friends said he had suffered more than 15 wounds and required multiple surgical procedures. He is reportedly the principal earning member of his family, which includes his wife and two young children.

Shoppers Intervene and Restrain Suspect

Several shoppers and mall workers intervened during the attack. Witnesses reportedly threw nearby objects to distract the attacker before overpowering and disarming him.

The bystanders restrained Larsen until West Valley City police arrived and took him into custody. Their intervention is believed to have prevented further injuries and allowed emergency responders to reach Sohailuddin.

Court records cited by authorities state that the suspect admitted targeting the employee because of his religion. Investigators also said Larsen made statements indicating an intention to carry out further violence against Muslims.

Suspect Held Without Bail

Larsen was being held without bail as authorities continued investigating the attack. Court records show that he was on parole for a previous violent felony at the time of the incident.

The Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the investigation before deciding the formal charges to pursue. The religious motive described in police documents has led officials and community organisations to treat the incident as an apparent hate-motivated attack, although the final charges will be determined through the legal process.

Indian Consulate Offers Assistance

The Consulate General of India in San Francisco said it was deeply saddened by the stabbing of an Indian national in Utah.

The consulate said it was in contact with Sohailuddin’s friends and family and was prepared to provide all possible consular assistance. Indian officials are also communicating with local authorities and monitoring both the investigation and the victim’s medical condition.

Sohailuddin’s family in Hyderabad has appealed for support and prayers for his recovery. A fundraising campaign has also been launched to help cover his treatment and family expenses.

Muslim Rights Group Condemns Attack

The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the stabbing and called on political and community leaders to reject anti-Muslim hatred.

The organisation said attacks motivated by religious hostility demonstrate the real-world consequences of inflammatory rhetoric and discrimination. Community members have also demanded accountability and stronger protection for religious minorities.

Sohailuddin remains under medical care, while the investigation into the Utah mall attack continues. The allegations against the suspect have not yet been tested in court, and he is entitled to due legal process.
