DMK Reaffirms Opposition To Proposed Delimitation Exercise

The political debate over delimitation has intensified in Tamil Nadu after DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin clarified that his party has opposed the proposed exercise from the beginning and will continue to resist it.

His remarks came amid speculation that the DMK could soften its position if certain changes were incorporated into the proposed framework. Udhayanidhi rejected suggestions of a policy shift and said delimitation was not a new concern for the party.

The issue has gained fresh significance after the Centre indicated that it intends to bring the delimitation proposal back into focus, linking the exercise with the implementation of women's reservation.

The DMK has argued that using population figures for redistributing parliamentary seats could disadvantage states such as Tamil Nadu that achieved better population control over several decades.

Reports have suggested that the party wants the 1971 Census to remain the basis for parliamentary representation for another 25 years. It has also sought a uniform 50% increase in Lok Sabha seats for all states and greater clarity on the exact number of seats each state would receive.

Tamil Nadu Fears Reduced Parliamentary Influence

Tamil Nadu currently has 39 Lok Sabha seats and accounts for around 7.2% of the House's present strength. The delimitation debate has triggered concern across southern states that representation based primarily on population could increase the political weight of more populous northern states.

Tamil Nadu parties argue that states which successfully implemented family planning and reduced population growth should not be penalised with comparatively slower growth in parliamentary representation.

If Tamil Nadu's seats were increased uniformly by 50%, as suggested by the DMK and other political voices, the state would have about 59 Lok Sabha constituencies.

The debate has also expanded beyond political representation. Southern leaders have raised concerns that reduced proportional influence in Parliament could eventually affect discussions around federal finances, resource distribution and tax devolution.

The proposed increase in the overall strength of the Lok Sabha has therefore become a major federal issue, with opposition parties seeking guarantees that population control will not reduce the political influence of better-performing states.

Vijay Calls Tamil Nadu MPs For Delimitation Consultation

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has called a meeting of MPs from the state to discuss the proposed delimitation exercise and assess its possible consequences for Tamil Nadu.

The meeting is expected to include members of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha across political parties. Vijay has previously described the proposed population-based delimitation model as unfair to Tamil Nadu and has called for a united response from the state.

Congress MP Manickam Tagore welcomed the decision to invite MPs cutting across party lines, saying Tamil Nadu should present a common position on an issue that could significantly alter its representation in Parliament.

The consultation comes at a politically sensitive time, with relations between the ruling TVK and the DMK strained over several recent developments. However, delimitation could create an issue on which rival parties find common ground.

Delimitation Debate Set To Intensify In Parliament

The DMK's presence in Parliament gives the party considerable importance in the evolving debate. With a significant group of MPs in both Houses, its final position could influence wider opposition discussions on the proposal.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has also conveyed opposition concerns over delimitation to the Centre, indicating that the issue could become a major confrontation when it returns to Parliament.

For Tamil Nadu, the central question remains whether future parliamentary representation should be determined primarily by population or whether states that succeeded in controlling population growth should receive safeguards.

With Vijay preparing to consult Tamil Nadu MPs and the DMK reiterating its opposition, delimitation is emerging as one of the state's biggest political and federal issues ahead of the next phase of parliamentary debate.
