As the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections approach, the ruling DMK-led alliance and the Opposition AIADMK-led alliance are preparing for a closely watched political contest. Both sides have largely relied on their existing leaders, with a significant number of sitting MLAs being renominated for the upcoming polls.
Data from candidate selections shows that around two-thirds of sitting MLAs from both alliances have been given tickets again, while the remaining candidates have been replaced. The DMK, however, has shown a willingness to introduce new faces, especially in constituencies where it lost in the previous election.
In contrast, the AIADMK and its allies appear to be relying more heavily on candidates who were defeated in the 2021 elections. The party has dropped fewer losing candidates compared to the DMK, indicating a strategy focused on giving past contenders another opportunity.
The 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election saw the DMK-led alliance secure a strong victory, winning 159 out of 234 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark. The AIADMK-led alliance, on the other hand, managed to win 75 seats.
With both alliances adopting different candidate selection strategies, the upcoming election is expected to be a key test of whether voters prefer continuity with experienced leaders or change through new candidates.
