Sharad Pawar Says Nehru And Modi Cannot Be Compared

Pawar Defends Nehru Legacy Amid BJP Comparison Row

NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar has reignited the Nehru-Modi comparison debate, saying Jawaharlal Nehru’s freedom struggle legacy and nation-building role cannot be equated with any contemporary leader.

Sharad Pawar Says Nehru And Modi Cannot Be Compared

NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar has strongly defended former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, saying there can be no comparison between Nehru and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking at his party’s 27th foundation day event in Mumbai, Pawar said Nehru’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle and nation-building remains historic and must be respected.

Pawar Defends Nehru’s Role In Nation-Building

Pawar said Nehru spent several years in jail during the freedom struggle under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. He added that Nehru’s sacrifices and role in shaping independent India placed him in a different category.

His remarks came as the NDA government marked 12 years in power and BJP leaders highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s long tenure in office.

Pawar said the post of Prime Minister is a constitutional position and should be respected. However, he added that Nehru’s contribution to India’s history cannot be ignored or reduced through political comparisons.

Attack On BJP Over Gandhi Family Remarks

The veteran Maharashtra leader also criticised BJP leaders over remarks made about former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.

Referring to comments linked to Operation Blue Star, Pawar said such statements were unacceptable. He said Indira Gandhi never compromised on India’s prestige and security.

Pawar also reminded party workers that both Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi lost their lives while serving the country.

Pawar Raises Current National Issues

Apart from the historical debate, Pawar also used the foundation day platform to criticise the government over present-day concerns.

He said farmers, educated unemployed youth, and women were facing serious challenges. Pawar also claimed that India’s foreign policy needed stronger direction.

NCP Split Remains In Focus

The foundation day event also came in the backdrop of the continuing split within the Nationalist Congress Party.

Sharad Pawar founded the NCP in 1999. The party split in 2023 after Ajit Pawar joined the ruling Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra along with several MLAs.

Pawar also made a veiled comment on newspaper advertisements published by the Ajit Pawar-led faction, saying party strength should be seen among workers and people, not only through costly publicity.

Why This Political Remark Matters

Pawar’s statement has added another layer to the ongoing political debate over legacy, leadership, and the role of past Prime Ministers in India’s history.

The remarks are likely to sharpen the BJP-opposition debate over political legacy, leadership, and the use of history in present-day electoral politics.
