Rahul Gandhi Leads Congress Protest Over Delhi Student Crackdown

The Congress protest over the Delhi student crackdown reached Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, as Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Mallikarjun Kharge, and other party leaders staged a sit-in near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence.

The protest followed the police action during the Cockroach Janta Party’s Parliament march on Monday. Congress leaders demanded accountability, a parliamentary discussion, and action over the treatment of students participating in the demonstration.

Jitendra Singh Meets Rahul Gandhi at Protest Site

Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh reached the protest site and spoke with Rahul Gandhi, urging him and the other Congress leaders to end the demonstration.

The minister was accompanied by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan. The meeting took place amid heavy police and Rapid Action Force deployment around Lok Kalyan Marg. Some Congress workers and leaders were also detained during the protest, according to reports.

Congress said its demands included the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a statement from the Home Minister in Parliament, a discussion in both Houses, an opportunity for students to present their concerns, and an inquiry into the previous day’s violence.

Rahul Gandhi Demands Apology to Students

Earlier on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi demanded that Prime Minister Modi apologise to the students over the police action. He described the reported treatment of protesters as unacceptable and accused the government of refusing to address concerns surrounding India’s education and examination system.

Gandhi also demanded the resignations of Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He argued that responsibility for the police action extended beyond the Education Ministry and said the government must answer questions in Parliament.

The Leader of the Opposition had earlier met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla with other opposition MPs and sought a parliamentary debate on the student protests and police response.

Congress Protest Over Delhi Student Crackdown Intensifies

Congress leaders said they marched towards the Prime Minister’s residence after allegedly being denied an adequate opportunity to raise the matter in Parliament. Rahul Gandhi said the demonstration was intended to seek answers for the action against young protesters.

Delhi Police, however, presented a different account of Monday’s clashes. Police alleged that sections of the crowd behaved violently, threw stones, and damaged vehicles. Officials said police personnel were also injured. Congress and student groups have alleged that excessive force, including lathis and tear gas, was used against protesters.

The competing claims surrounding the clashes remain subject to official examination. The government has said it is willing to engage with representatives of the protesters while maintaining that violence will not be tolerated.

Student Protest Linked to Examination Concerns

The demonstrations were organised amid allegations of examination irregularities, repeated paper leaks, and broader concerns over the testing system. CJP supporters have been demanding Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, examination reforms, and greater accountability from the government.

The issue has also disrupted the Monsoon Session of Parliament, with opposition MPs repeatedly seeking a debate on paper leaks and the police action against protesters.
