Malta Free ChatGPT Plus: OpenAI Deal Offers One-Year Access After AI Course

Malta Becomes First Country To Offer Free ChatGPT Plus Through AI Training Programme

Malta Announces Free ChatGPT Plus Access

Malta has become the first country to launch a nationwide programme offering free ChatGPT Plus access for one year. The move comes after OpenAI signed a partnership with the Government of Malta to improve public understanding and practical use of artificial intelligence. Under the scheme, residents who complete a free AI course will be eligible to receive ChatGPT Plus access for one year. The programme is expected to begin in May 2026 and will gradually expand as more Maltese residents complete the training. The course is designed to help people understand how AI tools can be used in daily life, education and work.

AI Course Open To Citizens Abroad

The initiative will also be available to Maltese citizens living outside the country, making the programme wider than a regular local rollout. Malta’s Economy Minister Silvio Schembri said the aim is to turn AI from an unfamiliar concept into practical support for families, students, and workers. OpenAI has not revealed the financial details of the agreement. The programme is likely to draw attention from other governments looking to improve AI literacy and make advanced digital tools more accessible to the public. The deal positions Malta as an early mover in national AI training and public technology adoption.
