Delhi Traders Seek Sonia Gandhi’s Help to Delay November 1 Rally

Delhi Traders Seek Sonia Gandhi’s Intervention

Delhi’s Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has appealed to Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi to help postpone the INDIA bloc’s November 1 rally at Ramlila Maidan until after Diwali.

The organisation approached Sonia after three letters to Rahul Gandhi failed to secure a favourable response. Traders argue that a large political gathering could affect shopping and deliveries during an important festive business period.

The Congress-led mobilisation seeks to challenge alleged electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The alliance is also demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. These electoral allegations remain the alliance’s claims.

Delhi Traders Fear Disruption To Diwali Business

CTI estimates that nearly 20 major wholesale and retail markets within five kilometres of Ramlila Maidan could face disruption. These include Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Khari Baoli, Bhagirath Palace, Chawri Bazar and Karol Bagh.

The organisation has warned that business worth Rs 10,000–12,000 crore could be affected. This figure represents the traders’ assessment of potential disruption, rather than an established loss.

Traders say approximately 5,000 trucks and tempos bring goods into these markets daily, while another 3,000 vehicles carry supplies to destinations across the National Capital Region and other states. They fear security arrangements and possible traffic restrictions could interrupt deliveries and discourage shoppers.

Delhi Traders’ Appeal Highlights Sonia Gandhi’s Influence

The decision to approach Sonia reflects the traders’ hope that her standing within Congress could help secure consideration of their concerns. Political commentator Rasheed Kidwai, Described the appeal as largely symbolic. He characterised Sonia as a leader who favours consultation and consensus, while describing Rahul’s approach as more decisive.

Kidwai also noted that Sonia generally avoids intervening in routine party affairs or Rahul’s political decisions. His suggestion that the appeal might lead to a shorter gathering or reduced protest hours was a possible outcome, not an announced arrangement.

November 1 Rally Postponement Remains Unconfirmed

The source does not establish that Congress or its allies have agreed to postpone the rally or change its duration. Sonia’s response and any decision on the traders’ request therefore remain uncertain.

The appeal places festive commerce alongside the alliance’s political campaign. For traders, the immediate priority is maintaining access to markets and keeping goods moving during the shopping season. Whether discussions produce a revised schedule or another accommodation remains to be seen.
