India Expands E-Visa Access via Attari and 10 More Ports
New Delhi, August 11, 2026: International travellers holding eligible electronic visas can now enter India through a wider network of airports and land crossings. The government has notified 11 additional entry points during 2026, taking the total number of locations accepting e-visa arrivals to 88.
The network now covers 37 airports, 38 seaports and 13 land ports. The Ministry of Home Affairs said the expansion is part of efforts to make India’s visa system simpler for legitimate visitors while continuing to strengthen immigration controls and internal security technology.
Electronic visas have become the main route for many eligible foreign nationals visiting India. The government says they account for around 78 per cent of visas issued by the country, while approximately 95 per cent of applications are processed within 72 hours.
Attari border entry expands land travel options
Attari Road in Punjab is among the land crossings notified for e-visa entry. Located on the India-Pakistan border, the checkpoint is one of nine land ports included in the expansion during 2026.
The remaining land entry points are Agartala, Darranga, Gede, Ghojadanga, Haridaspur, Jaigaon, Dawki and Moreh. These crossings give eligible travellers additional options for entering India from neighbouring countries, including Bangladesh, Bhutan and Myanmar.
The move could also improve access to destinations outside India’s largest metropolitan centres. Travellers using Dawki can reach Meghalaya, while Moreh serves as an important gateway between India and Myanmar. Jaigaon provides access along the India-Bhutan border.
The Attari facility does not change India’s visa eligibility rules for Pakistani nationals. People holding Pakistani passports cannot apply for an Indian e-visa. The restriction also applies to certain foreign nationals of Pakistani origin, who must apply for a regular visa through an Indian diplomatic mission.
Bhopal and Tirupati added to e-visa airport network
Bhopal Airport in Madhya Pradesh and Tirupati Airport in Andhra Pradesh have joined the list of designated airports accepting e-visa holders. The additions may reduce the need for some visitors to clear immigration at a major metropolitan airport before continuing to their destination.
Bhopal offers more direct access to central India, while Tirupati is a major destination for religious tourism. Actual travel convenience will still depend on the availability of international flights and immigration services at each airport.
India introduced its electronic visa programme in 2014 for nationals of 43 countries. It has since expanded to eligible citizens of 172 countries and covers 17 travel subcategories, including tourism, business, medical treatment, study, transit, conferences, mountaineering and cruise travel.
An approved e-visa does not automatically permit entry through every immigration checkpoint. Travellers must confirm that their chosen airport, seaport or land crossing accepts electronic visas. They should also carry a copy of their approved Electronic Travel Authorization and ensure their passport satisfies the applicable validity rules.
Applications should be submitted only through the official Indian e-Visa portal. Travellers can check government notices and authorised entry locations through the Ministry of Home Affairs. Unofficial websites may provide outdated information or charge unnecessary service fees.
