Mylswamy Annadurai To Head Tamil Nadu Curriculum Panel

Key Role In Tamil Nadu Syllabus Reform

Chennai, June 30, 2026: Former ISRO scientist Mylswamy Annadurai, best known for his role in India’s Chandrayaan-1 mission, has been appointed chairman of Tamil Nadu’s curriculum design committee.

The move is expected to draw attention from students, teachers and parents as Tamil Nadu prepares major changes to its state board syllabus under the State Education Policy 2025.

Annadurai replaces State Planning Commission member Sultan Ahmed Ismail, who recently stepped down from the position.

Committee To Revise State Board Curriculum

The curriculum design committee will work on developing the curriculum and syllabus for Tamil Nadu state board schools. The panel will suggest changes in syllabus content, teaching methods, and evaluation systems.

The committee will also study gaps between classroom teaching and student learning outcomes before preparing its recommendations.

Annadurai Brings Science And Innovation Focus

Mylswamy Annadurai served as the project director of Chandrayaan-1 and was also associated with Chandrayaan-2 and the Mars Orbiter Mission, popularly known as Mangalyaan.

His appointment is expected to bring a strong focus on science, innovation, technology, and future-ready learning to the school curriculum reform process.

New Member Added To The Panel

The School Education Department has also inducted Right to Education activist Anantajit Makia into the committee. With this addition, the panel now has 17 members.

Makia is also known for his views on education-related issues. Officials said his role would be limited to providing inputs, while the responsibility of curriculum development would remain with Annadurai and subject experts.

Experts From Education And Science Fields

The committee includes members from science, history, and education backgrounds. Madras University physicist and registrar Rita John, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research scientist T V Venkateswaran, and historian K Rajan are among the members.

The director of the State Council of Educational Research and Training will serve as the member-secretary. Directors of school education, elementary education, government examinations, and private schools will be ex officio members.

Inputs From Teachers, Parents And Experts

The curriculum design committee will seek suggestions from teachers, students, parents, and education experts. These inputs are expected to help the panel frame a syllabus that addresses current learning needs and future skill requirements.

The committee will review syllabus structure, classroom practices, and evaluation methods as part of the reform process.

Tamil Nadu Moves Ahead With Education Reforms

In November 2025, the Tamil Nadu government formed two committees to draft the new syllabus — the curriculum design committee and the high-level committee.

With Mylswamy Annadurai now heading the curriculum design committee, the state’s syllabus reform process is likely to gain wider attention in the education sector.
