Pakistan Faces Fresh Debate Over Trump’s Abraham Accords Message

Trump Post Sparks Pakistan Debate

US President Donald Trump’s latest push to expand the Abraham Accords has placed Pakistan in a sensitive diplomatic position. In a Truth Social post on May 25, 2026, Trump urged more Muslim-majority nations to consider joining the Israel normalisation framework as part of a wider regional peace effort linked to Iran talks.

The controversy began after Trump named Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir among the leaders he had spoken to, but did not mention Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The omission quickly triggered debate over Pakistan’s political power structure and the army’s strong role in foreign policy and national security decisions.

Israel Recognition Remains Sensitive

Pakistan has never recognised Israel and has traditionally linked any change in position to progress on Palestinian statehood. For Pakistan, Israel recognition remains one of the most politically sensitive foreign policy issues because public sentiment strongly supports the Palestinian cause.

Because of this, Trump’s Israel recognition push creates a difficult choice for Islamabad. Moving towards Israel recognition could invite strong domestic criticism, while rejecting Washington’s proposal may affect Pakistan’s ties with the US at a time of regional uncertainty.

The mention of Asim Munir has also highlighted his rising profile in discussions involving Iran, Gulf nations and Washington. For Pakistan, the issue is no longer only about foreign policy. It has become a political test involving diplomacy, military influence and public sentiment.
