The Andhra Pradesh government plans to mobilise investments of up to Rs 9.3 lakh crore for the Visakhapatnam Economic Region through public and private projects. The VER plan will focus on AI data centres, ports, tourism, clean technology, green hydrogen, energy and infrastructure-led regional development.
Visakhapatnam Economic Region Eyes Rs 9.3 Lakh Crore Push
Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government has unveiled an ambitious investment plan of up to Rs 9.3 lakh crore to transform the Visakhapatnam Economic Region into a major industrial, technology, logistics and tourism hub.
The state proposes to invest between Rs 3.5 lakh crore and Rs 4 lakh crore in infrastructure and development projects while seeking approximately Rs 5.3 lakh crore from private companies. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the regional development plan at his camp office in Undavalli on Wednesday.
Visakhapatnam Region Gets Micro-Level Development Plan
Naidu said the objective of the VER project is to develop the wider Visakhapatnam region through detailed, micro-level planning rather than focusing only on the city.
The proposed economic region is expected to bring together industrial corridors, ports, technology infrastructure, tourism destinations, urban development projects and renewable-energy investments under a coordinated growth strategy.
Officials have been directed to identify projects that can create jobs, strengthen infrastructure and attract domestic as well as global investors. The government is also expected to explore the convergence of state and central funds for major public infrastructure works.
Bay City Project Becomes VER Anchor
The planned Vizag Bay City project will serve as one of the central components of the economic-region strategy. The integrated coastal development is expected to support tourism, business districts, innovation centres, premium residential areas and recreational infrastructure.
VMRDA has previously initiated planning for a coastal hub along the Kailasagiri–Bheemunipatnam stretch. The project has been envisioned around coastal tourism, business and innovation ecosystems, and integrated urban development.
The Bay City proposal could strengthen Visakhapatnam’s position as an international waterfront destination while supporting hospitality, real estate, entertainment and service-sector employment.
AI, Ports and Clean Energy Lead Investment Push
The VER plan identifies artificial intelligence data centres, port-based industries, tourism, green hydrogen, clean technology and energy projects as major investment areas.
Visakhapatnam is already emerging as an important technology and infrastructure destination because of its coastline, ports, industrial base and improving air connectivity. The new Bhogapuram international airport is also expected to support business travel, tourism, logistics and future data-centre investments in North Andhra.
Port-linked manufacturing and logistics projects could benefit from access to Visakhapatnam, Gangavaram and Mulapeta ports, while renewable-energy projects could support Andhra Pradesh’s broader clean-industry ambitions.
Development Corridor Could Extend to Godavari Region
Naidu instructed officials to extend the planning framework from Mulapeta Port in Srikakulam district to the Akhanda Godavari project near Rajahmundry. This would connect the growth of North Coastal Andhra with tourism and infrastructure development in the Godavari region.
The Chief Minister also called for Viability Gap Funding wherever commercially important projects require government support to become financially feasible.
The success of the Rs 9.3 lakh crore vision will ultimately depend on project approvals, funding, land availability and private-sector commitments. However, the plan positions Visakhapatnam at the centre of Andhra Pradesh’s long-term strategy for investment, employment and regional economic growth.
