Epic Movie Review: A Promising Romance That Loses Its Way

Epic Movie Review: A Promising Romance That Loses Its Way

Plot

Aspiring filmmaker Aditya travels to the UK for postgraduate studies, where he meets Kadali. Their instant connection develops into a romantic relationship, but Kadali’s personal conditions, hidden past and emotional struggles gradually create distance between them.

Overview

Aditya Hasan’s feature-film debut begins as a relatable romantic drama with humour and middle-class emotions. Although the first half offers engaging moments and mature dialogue, the film becomes slow and emotionally unconvincing after the interval.

Performances

Anand Deverakonda and Vaishnavi Chaitanya deliver sincere performances but fail to recreate the impact of their Baby combination. Sivaji stands out with excellent comic timing and restrained emotion, while Vasuki Anand performs naturally. Kalyan Shankar’s comedy track feels disconnected from the story.

Technical Aspects

Azeem Mohammad’s cinematography is adequate, particularly in the UK portions, but lacks a distinctive visual style. The production values suit the story, while the uneven screenplay prevents the emotional scenes from reaching their full potential.

Music

Hesham Abdul Wahab’s background score effectively supports the film’s romantic and emotional mood. One song leaves an impression, but the remaining soundtrack is underwhelming for a relationship-driven drama.

Editing

Navin Nooli maintains a reasonable pace during the first half. However, the repetitive scenes and prolonged emotional portions in the second half make the film feel monotonous and unnecessarily lengthy.

Positives

  • Mature dialogue writing
  • Situational humour in the first half
  • Sivaji’s performance
  • Tasteful portrayal of intimacy
  • A few relatable romantic moments

Negatives

  • Weak and tedious second half
  • Inconsistent narration
  • Insufficient emotional development
  • Misplaced comedy track
  • Excessive dependence on realism
  • Limited impact from the lead pair

Analysis

Epic works best when it explores Aditya and Kadali’s relationship through natural conversations, humour and everyday experiences. Aditya Hasan demonstrates maturity as a dialogue writer and handles physical intimacy with restraint.

The film’s realism, however, becomes its biggest limitation. The second half presents personal experiences without enough cinematic development, making the characters’ emotional changes feel abrupt. Kalyan Shankar’s mass-comedy portions further disturb the film’s otherwise realistic tone.

Despite a promising beginning, the narrative gradually becomes repetitive and emotionally distant. Stronger dramatisation, tighter editing and a fresher lead pairing could have transformed the film into a more affecting romantic drama.

Bottom Line: Emotional Misfire

Rating: 2.25/5
