Ohh My Dog Review: Oscar Leads a Heartfelt Family Adventure

Ohh My Dog Review: Oscar Leads a Heartfelt Family Adventure

Plot

Ohh My Dog begins with an emotional tribute to Senapati, a brave police dog separated from her puppies. Her two sons, Oscar and Momo, grow up in very different circumstances. Momo lives with young Apu and his family in Assam, while Oscar stays with Prince, a poor construction worker in Bihar. Their lives take a dramatic turn when Momo is kidnapped and Prince goes missing. What follows is a parallel rescue journey, with Apu searching for Momo and Oscar using his instincts and scent to find Prince. Along the way, the story exposes animal trafficking, child labour, exploitation of poor workers and corruption.

Overview

Directed by Amit Rai, Ohh My Dog is an emotional family adventure that places the human-animal bond at the centre of its story. The film combines humour, social commentary and rescue-thriller elements, with Oscar emerging as the true emotional anchor. While the long runtime and some exaggerated characterisation weaken the pace, the sincerity of the narrative and Oscar’s presence keep the film engaging.

Performances

Oscar is easily the film’s biggest scene-stealer. The trained canine brings energy, emotion and charm to the rescue sequences. Maahi Rai makes a confident debut as Apu and handles the emotional moments well, though the character is sometimes written as overly smart. Pankaj Tripathi adds warmth and stability with a restrained performance. Rajesh Kumar is convincing as the Bihari police officer, while Pavan Malhotra brings energy but is occasionally too loud. Nikhil Kumar and the supporting cast fit naturally into the film’s grounded setting.

Technical Aspects

Amit Rai handles the emotional core effectively and makes the parallel rescue structure the film’s strongest narrative device. The realistic locations and supporting characters add authenticity. However, the screenplay becomes repetitive during the chase portions, and some regional stereotypes feel dated. The social themes are meaningful, but the film sometimes tries to address too many issues at once.

Music

The songs do not leave a strong impression and remain one of the weaker elements of the film. The background score works better, particularly during Oscar’s rescue moments and emotional scenes, where it adds tension and sentiment.

Editing

Editing is a major concern. At around two-and-a-half hours, the film feels longer than necessary. Several chase sequences could have been shortened, and a tighter second half would have improved the overall pace and impact.

Positives

Oscar’s performance, emotional human-animal bond, Pankaj Tripathi and Rajesh Kumar, engaging parallel rescue concept, strong emotional moments, relevant social themes, family-friendly appeal.

Negatives

Lengthy runtime, repetitive chase portions, regional stereotypes, loud characterisation, forgettable songs, uneven pacing, predictable moments.

Analysis

Ohh My Dog works best when it focuses on the emotional bond between people and animals. Oscar is not treated as a side character but as the film’s real hero, and that choice gives the story its strongest emotional identity. The parallel rescue structure—Apu searching for Momo while Oscar searches for Prince—adds freshness to a familiar missing-person setup.

The film also explores animal trafficking, child labour, corruption and exploitation, giving the story a broader social angle. However, the screenplay occasionally becomes overloaded with themes and loses focus. Oscar’s investigative portions remain the most entertaining, especially when he follows scents, discovers clues and confronts danger.

The supporting cast adds strength, but the film’s long runtime reduces the tension in the second half. Some scenes stretch beyond their purpose, and the climax could have benefited from tighter writing. Still, the emotional sincerity, Oscar’s charm and the family-friendly tone make Ohh My Dog a pleasant watch despite its flaws.

Bottom Line: Heartfelt Adventure
