Allu Arjun Describes the Saree Look as His Boldest Moment

Known for his rugged screen presence, Allu Arjun surprised audiences with his dramatic appearance during the Gangamma Jathara sequence in Pushpa 2. Reflecting on the transformation in a recent interview, the actor described playing a woman as “the most alpha thing” he had ever done.

The look required him to wear an elaborate saree, heavy jewellery, detailed makeup and blue body paint. However, the challenge went beyond the physical transformation. Allu Arjun had to convincingly represent the feminine elements of the ritual without losing the aggression, confidence and swagger associated with Pushpa Raj.

Gangamma Jathara is a traditional festival celebrated in parts of Andhra Pradesh in honour of Goddess Gangamma. The week-long celebration commemorates the goddess’s victory over a local ruler and includes devotees wearing elaborate costumes and feminine attire as part of its rituals.

According to Allu Arjun, the team initially approached the transformation with uncertainty because it required a careful balance. If presented incorrectly, the sequence could have appeared disconnected from Pushpa Raj’s established personality. The performance therefore had to retain the character’s strength while embracing the ritual’s feminine expression.

That balance ultimately became one of the film’s biggest strengths.
