Assam Flood Situation Remains Serious Despite Falling Numbers
More than 3.32 lakh people remain affected by floods across seven Assam districts, although the number has declined from 4.45 lakh reported a day earlier. Seven additional deaths in Sivasagar have increased the official toll to 75, while rescue teams continue assisting displaced families.
Guwahati, July 29, 2026, 11:10 AM IST: The latest Assam flood relief update for July 2026 shows that the crisis remains severe in parts of Upper Assam despite a reduction in the overall affected population.
According to the latest disaster-management figures, 3,32,639 people across 622 villages and 21 revenue circles continue to face flooding. Seven deaths reported from the Nazira revenue circle in Sivasagar district raised the statewide toll to 75.
Assam Flood Relief Update July 2026: Worst-Hit Districts
Flooding continues in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon, Sonitpur, and Kamrup Metropolitan.
Charaideo remains the most severely affected district, with approximately 1.42 lakh residents impacted. Sivasagar has more than 97,000 affected people, while around 57,000 residents remain affected in Jorhat.
Although the affected population has fallen from Monday’s figure of 4.45 lakh, waterlogging, damaged roads, and losses to homes and livelihoods continue to create major challenges for residents returning to their villages.
Over 32,000 People Sheltered in Assam Relief Camps
Authorities are operating 81 relief camps that currently shelter 32,477 displaced people. Another 34 distribution centres are supplying food, drinking water, medicines, and essential items to affected communities.
The Army, Air Force, National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force, Fire and Emergency Services, and local volunteers are participating in rescue and relief operations.
The Dhansiri South river at Numaligarh in Golaghat remains above the danger level, requiring continued monitoring even as water levels recede in some other areas.
Assam Flood Compensation Increased to ₹9 Lakh
The Assam government has increased the total financial assistance for families of people killed in the floods to ₹9 lakh.
The existing ₹4 lakh ex gratia will be supplemented by an additional ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The government has also waived the requirement for a post-mortem report, allowing a certificate from the respective circle officer to be used for processing compensation claims.
Families of people who remain missing for more than 30 days will also become eligible under the revised assistance rules.
Severely affected households in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat will receive ₹15,000 as immediate support for essential domestic needs.
Crop Losses and Damage to Public Infrastructure
Approximately 45,341.98 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged. Damage has also been reported to houses, cattle sheds, schools, and anganwadi centres across the flood-hit districts.
The extensive crop losses are expected to place additional pressure on farming families already dealing with damaged homes, livestock losses and prolonged displacement.
Students in the worst-affected districts will receive replacement textbooks, uniforms, and financial support for purchasing study materials. Authorities are also creating learning and recreational spaces for children staying in relief camps.
Relief Operations Continue Across Upper Assam
While the reduction in the affected population indicates that conditions have improved in some areas, thousands of families remain unable to return home safely.
Disaster-management teams are expected to continue rescue work, relief distribution, and damage assessments until water levels fall further. The official figures may also change as authorities receive updated information from villages and complete verification of casualties and missing-person reports.
