Wayanad Tunnel Project Landslide: Rescue Teams Search Kalladi Site After Heavy Rain
A major landslide struck the Wayanad tunnel project site near Kalladi in Kerala on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, triggering a large rescue operation amid heavy rainfall in the region. The incident occurred near Meenakshi Bridge, close to the ongoing Anakkompoyil-Meppadi tunnel road project, which is being developed to improve connectivity between Malappuram and Wayanad districts.
According to initial reports, at least one person was killed, seven people were injured, and several others were reported missing after debris slid down near the tunnel worksite. Some later updates reported a higher toll, but officials were still verifying details as rescue operations continued.
Landslide Hits Near Meenakshi Bridge
The landslide was reported at Kalladi near Meppady, where construction-related activity for the tunnel road project was underway. The affected area included a site where workers and project staff were staying, while a few houses and homestays were also located nearby. Residents were among the first to respond and helped rescue people from the site before official teams arrived.
Fire and Rescue Services personnel, police, and National Disaster Response Force teams were deployed to the area. Officials said search operations were being carried out to check whether more people remained trapped under the debris. Vehicles used for transporting tunnel project staff were also damaged in the landslide.
Heavy Rain Adds To Rescue Challenge
The landslide came after intense rainfall in Wayanad. Weather alerts were issued for the district as rain continued to affect parts of northern Kerala. Reports said a red alert was issued for Wayanad and Kozhikode, while orange alerts were issued for Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragod.
The India Meteorological Department’s red alert indicates the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall, increasing concern in hilly and landslide-prone areas. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as rescue teams continue work at the site.
Government Reviews Rescue Work
Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan reviewed the situation and directed senior ministers to reach Wayanad to coordinate rescue and relief operations. State officials said all available rescue systems were being mobilised, with additional personnel being sent from nearby districts if required.
The Chief Minister also raised concerns over safety precautions at major infrastructure project sites, saying the government had grievances about inadequate safety measures in some construction activities. He claimed that soil piled up near the site had not been removed despite earlier warnings, and said this aspect would need serious examination.
Safety Concerns Around Hill Projects
The Wayanad tunnel project is a key infrastructure plan aimed at improving road connectivity between Malappuram and Wayanad. However, Tuesday’s landslide has brought renewed attention to construction safety, slope stability, and disaster preparedness in Kerala’s high-range regions.
Wayanad has faced repeated landslide disasters during heavy monsoon periods. The latest incident has once again highlighted the need for strict monitoring of excavation sites, debris dumping, drainage systems, and worker safety arrangements in ecologically sensitive hill areas.
Authorities are expected to continue search and rescue work while assessing damage at the Kalladi tunnel project site. Further official updates are awaited on the missing persons, the final casualty count, and the safety review of the construction zone.
