Two women from Tamil Nadu, P. Pechiyammal and Govindhammal, received the Dr. M.S. Swaminathan Award for Environment Protection 2026 in Chennai for their grassroots work in marine conservation, sustainable agriculture and community empowerment.

Two Women Honoured for Environmental Leadership

P. Pechiyammal, leader of the Neithal Self Help Group in Vedhalai, Ramanathapuram district, and Govindhammal, former director of Nallavur Farmer Producer Company Limited in Villupuram district, were selected for the 2026 honour. The award was instituted by the Rotary Club of Madras East in association with CavinKare Private Limited to recognise people whose work reflects agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan’s vision of sustainable development, environmental stewardship and inclusive progress.

Both recipients were recognised for connecting conservation with local livelihoods and helping women take a stronger role in managing natural resources.

Pechiyammal’s Conservation Work in the Gulf of Mannar

Pechiyammal was honoured for leading community-based conservation initiatives in the Gulf of Mannar. Her work includes recovering abandoned ghost fishing gear, managing marine waste and encouraging coastal communities to protect fragile marine ecosystems.

Through the Neithal Self Help Group, she has also helped create sustainable livelihood opportunities for coastal women. Her approach shows that environmental protection becomes stronger when local residents participate in conservation, decision-making and the responsible use of marine resources.

Govindhammal Promotes Climate-Resilient Farming

Govindhammal received the award for promoting sustainable agriculture, strengthening farmer producer organisations and encouraging the conservation of soil, water and other natural resources. Her initiatives have supported climate-resilient farming while improving leadership opportunities for rural women.

She has also encouraged value-addition activities that can help farmers obtain better income and market access. The awards were presented by National Biodiversity Authority chairman Dr. Virendra Tiwari in the presence of Rotary International District 3234 Governor D. Suresh Jain and M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation chairperson Dr. Soumya Swaminathan. Organisers said the honour highlights how community participation and women-led action can produce practical, lasting environmental solutions.
