Bengaluru Quarry Tragedy: 7 Workers Killed In Rock Slide

Bengaluru, July 3: Seven migrant workers were killed and five others injured after a massive granite rock slid down and fell on them at a quarry near Madapattana on the outskirts of Bengaluru on Thursday, July 2.

Rock Falls On Workers At Quarry Site

According to police, crusher-related work was underway at two levels of the quarry site. A drilling machine was reportedly being used on the upper side when a huge rock slipped and crashed onto workers engaged below.

Deputy Inspector General of Police, Central Range, S Girish, said seven workers died on the spot, while five injured persons were taken to the hospital. Officials said the injured workers are out of danger.

Victims Identified By Police

Police said the deceased included five workers from Madhya Pradesh, one from Chhattisgarh, and one from Yadgir in Karnataka. The victims were identified as Ramu, Rajpal Singh, Satyanarayan Singh, Ramavtar Singh, Dharmesh Singh, Rajesh Prasad Chaudhary and Bhuvaneshwari Singh Gond.

A case has been registered by Bengaluru South police based on a complaint by a migrant worker. Quarry managers D Anandaswamy, Udayashankar, Pandu, and Tirupathi have been named in the case. Police officials said negligence appears to be a key factor behind the incident.

Safety Rules And Compensation Under Focus

Officials from the Mines and Geology Department said the quarry owner has agreed to provide compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the families of the deceased and Rs 5 lakh to the injured workers. The incident has also brought quarry safety rules and worker protection measures back into focus.

Karnataka Chief Minister D K Shivakumar expressed grief over the tragedy and said the government would issue fresh guidelines for quarrying activities across the state. He said officials have been directed to submit a detailed report on the incident.

Government To Review Quarry Norms

The Chief Minister said initial reports suggested that the accident was not caused by blasting but may have been linked to soil erosion. He added that the government would examine whether quarrying operations were being carried out as per safety norms.

Opposition leaders also demanded strict action and better safety enforcement at quarry sites. BJP leader R Ashoka, who met the injured workers at a hospital, said justice must be ensured for the families of the deceased.

The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns over worker safety, quarry monitoring, and enforcement of mining rules in Karnataka. Authorities are expected to review quarry permissions and safety practices after the detailed investigation report is submitted.
