Tamil Nadu To Buy Only AC Government Buses From Now, Says Transport Minister

Tamil Nadu Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban has said that the state government will now procure only air-conditioned government buses, following Chief Minister Vijay’s direction to make public transport more comfortable and accessible for people across the state.

Speaking to reporters in Salem, Parthiban said the Chief Minister wants people to travel more widely and comfortably in government buses. He added that the government’s focus is to improve bus connectivity even in remote parts of Tamil Nadu.

CM Vijay Pushes For Comfortable Public Transport

According to the minister, CM Vijay recently travelled on a government bus and expressed that every new bus purchased by the state should have air-conditioning facilities. The move is being seen as part of the government’s larger plan to modernise Tamil Nadu’s public transport system.

Parthiban said the Chief Minister wants buses to have facilities that allow all sections of people to travel comfortably. The statement comes shortly after the government launched a new fleet of buses across the state.

300 New Buses Flagged Off

Last week, CM Vijay flagged off 300 new government buses to improve connectivity and reduce waiting time for commuters. The new fleet was purchased for Rs 127.21 crore and includes 164 diesel buses and 136 BS-VI compliant CNG buses.

The buses have already been deployed from major transport hubs such as Koyambedu and Kilambakkam. The launch event was attended by senior ministers and officials from the Transport Department.

Focus On Remote Connectivity

The government’s latest decision aims to strengthen bus services across Tamil Nadu, especially in areas where public transport access remains limited. The AC-only procurement plan is expected to improve commuter comfort while encouraging more people to use government buses.

The move also signals a shift towards better passenger facilities in state-run transport, with comfort, connectivity, and modernisation becoming key priorities for the Tamil Nadu government.
