CM Vijay Launches Singappen Force With 70 Units For Women's Safety
Overview: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has launched the Singappen Special Force with drone patrols, ₹354 crore funding, and 70 women safety units across the state.
Women's Safety Gets A Major Push In Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has launched the Singappen Special Force, a dedicated all-women police unit aimed at improving the safety of women and children in public spaces. The initiative has become one of the biggest early governance decisions of the Vijay-led government, as it combines field-level policing with modern surveillance technology.
The force has been introduced to strengthen preventive policing and improve public confidence. Women's safety has remained a serious concern in many states, and Tamil Nadu is now trying to address the issue through a separate police unit, special patrol vehicles and technology-backed monitoring.
70 Units To Begin Operations Across Tamil Nadu
A key update in the project is that 70 Singappen units will initially begin operations across Tamil Nadu. These units will include 140 sub-inspectors and 420 constables. Each patrol vehicle will have an all-women team consisting of one sub-inspector, two head constables, and a driver.
This gives the project a stronger ground-level structure. Instead of remaining only a symbolic announcement, the force is expected to start with dedicated teams that can patrol sensitive areas and respond to complaints. Though a complete district-wise rollout list has not yet been officially released, the 70-unit launch indicates that the government wants to expand the system across the state in a phased manner.
The units are expected to focus on public places where women and children need stronger safety support, including crowded areas, public transport zones, educational locations, markets, and isolated stretches.
Drone Patrols Become The Big Highlight
The biggest talking point of the Singappen Special Force is the plan to introduce drone-based patrolling. CM Vijay said drone patrol systems will be used to help prevent crimes against women. This gives Tamil Nadu’s women safety model a technology-driven focus.
Drone surveillance can help police monitor larger areas quickly. It can also support ground teams during emergencies by giving control rooms better visibility. In crowded places or difficult-to-monitor locations, drones can become an additional tool for faster response.
The force will also be equipped with body-worn cameras with live-streaming capabilities, communication systems and modern surveillance equipment. These tools can improve accountability, coordination, and evidence collection if used properly.
₹354 Crore Allocation And New Posts
The Tamil Nadu government has allocated more than ₹354 crore for the first phase of the Singappen Special Force. The funds are expected to support vehicles, technology, training, uniforms, surveillance systems, and other equipment required for the new unit.
The government will also create 2,545 new posts exclusively for the force. These include inspectors, sub-inspectors, and constables. Personnel recruited for the unit will undergo special training, which is important because women's safety policing requires sensitivity, quick response, and proper handling of complaints.
The special uniform of the Singappen personnel will include khaki trousers and blue shirts. CM Vijay also unveiled the unit’s insignia, which features the image of a lioness and a policewoman.
Focus On Preventive Policing
The Singappen Special Force will focus on preventing crimes before they happen. The unit is expected to act against stalking, sexual harassment, attempted abductions, harassment in public transport, public obscenity, and other crimes against women.
This preventive policing approach is important because many safety concerns begin with repeated harassment, stalking or threats. If police teams respond early, more serious incidents can be avoided.
CM Vijay also warned that crimes against women would be handled with zero tolerance. At the same time, he asked police officials to ensure that innocent people are not wrongly implicated while taking swift action against offenders. This balance is important for public trust.
Political Importance For Vijay Government
The Singappen Special Force is also politically significant for CM Vijay. As a new chief minister, his early administrative decisions are being closely watched. Women's safety was one of the major issues raised during his political campaign, and this project gives his government a strong public-safety message.
By launching a dedicated force with drone patrols and all-women teams, Vijay is trying to show that his government is serious about law and order. The move also helps him build an image beyond cinema popularity and position himself as a governance-focused leader.
However, the real success of the project will depend on implementation. The government must ensure that the 70 units are deployed effectively, response times are monitored, complaints are handled properly, and technology is used responsibly.
A Big Test On The Ground
The Singappen Special Force has created strong expectations among women, students, working professionals, and families across Tamil Nadu. A visible women's safety patrol system can improve public confidence, especially if it works consistently in busy and vulnerable areas.
The drone patrol plan has given the project a modern image, but technology alone cannot solve safety issues. The force will need trained personnel, strong coordination with local police stations, proper helpline response, and regular review by senior officers.
For now, the launch of 70 units gives the initiative a stronger foundation. If the government expands it carefully and makes the system accessible to the public, Singappen could become one of Tamil Nadu’s most important women's safety initiatives.
