Chennai Suburban Rail Upgrade To Improve Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Connectivity

Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Line Upgrade

The Arakkonam-Chengalpattu rail doubling project has received approval from Indian Railways, marking a major step for Chennai’s suburban rail upgrade. The Rs 993 crore project, covering 68 km under Southern Railway, is expected to reduce train congestion and improve movement on one of Tamil Nadu’s busy railway corridors.

This route connects Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, and Arakkonam. It is used by daily suburban passengers, long-distance trains, and freight services. Railway officials said the existing single-line section is already close to full capacity, while travel and goods movement are expected to increase further in the coming years.

Chennai Suburbs To Benefit

The project is expected to improve train punctuality, reduce delays, and support better frequency for commuters. It will also help freight movement for cement, automobiles, foodgrains, iron, and steel.

The corridor passes near key industrial areas such as Mahindra World City, Sriperumbudur, Oragadam, and Irungattukottai. Better rail connectivity may also support future access to the Parandur airport project near Kancheepuram. Once completed, the rail doubling work is expected to create safer and faster transport for Chennai’s growing suburban and industrial belt.
