Nobel Prize 2026 Schedule: Dates, India Times and Why It Matters

The official schedule for the 2026 Nobel Prize announcements has been released. The winners will be revealed in Stockholm and Oslo from October 5 to 12, beginning with Physiology or Medicine and ending with Economic Sciences.

The 2026 Nobel Prize announcements will begin on Monday, October 5, with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and continue until Monday, October 12, when the prize in Economic Sciences is announced.

Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Peace will be announced on consecutive days during the opening week. The announcements will be broadcast live through the Nobel Prize organisation’s official digital platforms.

For science, the awards carry significance beyond global recognition. They draw public attention to discoveries that have transformed knowledge, medicine and technology, often after decades of research and verification.

Nobel Prize 2026 announcement schedule and India timings

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet will announce the Physiology or Medicine prize on October 5 at 11:30 AM CEST at the earliest, corresponding to 3:00 PM IST.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will announce the Physics prize on October 6 and Chemistry prize on October 7. Both announcements are scheduled for 11:45 AM CEST at the earliest, or 3:15 PM IST.

The Swedish Academy will announce the Literature prize on October 8 at 1:00 PM CEST at the earliest, corresponding to 4:30 PM IST.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee will reveal the Peace Prize in Oslo on October 9 at 11:00 AM CEST, or 2:30 PM IST. The Economic Sciences prize will be announced in Stockholm on October 12 at 11:45 AM CEST at the earliest, or 3:15 PM IST.

Prize Announcement date India time
Physiology or Medicine Monday, October 5 3:00 PM IST
Physics Tuesday, October 6 3:15 PM IST
Chemistry Wednesday, October 7 3:15 PM IST
Literature Thursday, October 8 4:30 PM IST
Peace Friday, October 9 2:30 PM IST
Economic Sciences Monday, October 12 3:15 PM IST

The official schedule describes several announcement times as “at the earliest,” meaning brief delays are possible.

Nobel Prize science awards recognise transformative research

The Nobel science prizes do not simply reward an interesting experiment or a single clever idea. They generally recognise work that has changed scientific understanding or created major opportunities in medicine and technology.

The selection process frequently honours discoveries many years after the original research. This allows scientific evidence to mature and gives experts time to assess how deeply a finding has influenced its field.

Recent awards illustrate that reach. The 2025 Physics prize recognised John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis for work involving macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit.

The 2025 Chemistry award honoured Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson and Omar M. Yaghi for developing metal-organic frameworks. The Medicine prize recognised Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.

Alfred Nobel’s will created five original prizes

The Nobel Prize originated with Swedish inventor, engineer and entrepreneur Alfred Nobel, who was best known for developing dynamite.

In his will, signed in 1895, Nobel directed that most of his fortune should fund annual prizes for people whose work provided the greatest benefit to humankind. He identified five categories: Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature and Peace.

Nobel died in 1896, and the first prizes were awarded in 1901 after the institutions responsible for administering the awards completed the necessary arrangements.

The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel was established later, in 1968, and awarded for the first time in 1969. It is commonly grouped with the Nobel Prizes but was not one of the five categories named in Nobel’s will.

Nobel Prize winners receive global scientific attention

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the Physics, Chemistry and Economic Sciences prizes. The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet selects the Medicine laureates, while the Swedish Academy chooses the Literature winner.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee selects the Peace Prize laureate in Oslo. The other prizes are announced in Stockholm.

Each laureate receives a Nobel medal, diploma and a share of the prize money. More importantly, the announcement can bring worldwide attention to specialised research that may otherwise remain largely within academic circles.

The Nobel Prize organisation says the 2026 announcements will be streamed live. The award ceremonies are traditionally held on December 10, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
