Vishwakarma Jayanthi was celebrated with religious devotion and traditional rituals at the Sri Akkasalai Pillaiyar temple complex on Keelaratha Veethi in Rameswaram. The festival was organised by the Rameswaram Vishwakarma Ainthozhil Sangam and attracted a large gathering of devotees, association members and their families.
The celebration honours Lord Vishwakarma, who is revered in Hindu tradition as the divine architect and the patron deity of artisans, engineers, craftsmen and people working in various skilled professions. Devotees believe that Vishwakarma incarnated under the Chithirai star during the Tamil month of Purattasi.
Vishwakarma Jayanthi is observed across India by communities associated with construction, metalwork, carpentry, sculpture, architecture and other traditional trades. Special prayers are performed for professional success, workplace safety and prosperity.
The Rameswaram celebrations began with a Ganapati homam conducted inside the temple complex. Priests later performed a ceremonial abhishekam for Lord Vishwakarma, followed by special floral decorations and deeparathanai.
The temple premises were decorated for the occasion, creating a festive atmosphere as devotees gathered to participate in the rituals. Prayers were offered for the well-being of workers, artisans, business owners and their families. An idol of Vishwabrahma was then installed in a specially decorated section of the temple. Members of the Vishwakarma community offered flowers and participated in collective worship as part of the Jayanthi observances.
Following the temple rituals, hundreds of women carrying flower trays participated in a procession through the four ratha veethis surrounding the temple. Traditional auspicious music accompanied the procession as devotees moved through the streets in a disciplined and devotional manner.
The colourful event drew the attention of local residents and visitors. Participants offered prayers and joined the procession, which highlighted the community’s cultural traditions and collective devotion to Lord Vishwakarma.
Executive committee and general committee members of the Rameswaram Vishwakarma Ainthozhil Sangam attended the programme in large numbers along with their families. Organisers said the celebration was intended to preserve religious customs, strengthen community unity and introduce younger generations to the significance of Vishwakarma Jayanthi. The festival concluded after special worship and prayers for prosperity, professional growth and harmony among members of the Vishwakarma community.
