KCR Phone Tapping Case: SIT May Name BRS Chief In Fresh Chargesheet

Former Telangana chief minister K. Chandrashekar Rao could face fresh scrutiny in the state’s phone-tapping investigation, with government sources indicating that the Special Investigation Team is preparing an additional chargesheet.

The proposed move would bring the former government’s political leadership into sharper focus. However, the available coverage does not confirm that an additional chargesheet naming KCR has been submitted to court.

KCR Phone Tapping Case Faces Possible Expansion

Which cited unnamed official sources on October 28, investigators intend to name KCR as the prime accused. BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao, former minister T. Harish Rao and MLC K. Naveen could also be included.

The newspaper attributed the proposed action to investigators’ examination of alleged surveillance approvals, technical material and statements from people connected to the case. These remain allegations, with no judicial finding establishing the leaders’ guilt.

How The Telangana Surveillance Investigation Began

The case emerged in March 2024 after the change of government in Telangana. It centres on allegations that personnel in the Special Intelligence Bureau used surveillance capabilities to monitor individuals beyond legitimate intelligence requirements.

Those allegedly targeted included politicians, businesspeople and journalists. Investigators also examined accusations that electronic records were destroyed following the BRS government’s defeat.

The original case named former intelligence chief T. Prabhakar Rao, D. Praneeth Rao, M. Thirupathanna, N. Bhujanga Rao, P. Radhakishan Rao and television channel operator A. Shravan Kumar Rao. Their alleged roles concern different aspects of the surveillance operation.

Allegations Against Senior BRS Leaders

The allegations involving KTR and Naveen include a realtor’s claim that he was pressured into contributing ₹13 crore through electoral bonds. Claims concerning Harish Rao relate to alleged surveillance of political rivals.

KCR was questioned by the SIT in February 2026. His questioning and possible inclusion in a chargesheet do not establish criminal responsibility. Investigators would need to substantiate the alleged connection between surveillance activities and decisions by political leaders.

BRS Rejects Allegations As Politically Motivated

BRS has denied wrongdoing by its leadership and characterised the investigation as political vendetta. A senior party leader quoted by Deccan Chronicle alleged that the proposed action was intended to divert attention from the Congress government’s performance.

The next significant development will be confirmation of any additional filing and the evidence placed before the court. Until then, KCR’s proposed inclusion should be presented as a claim attributed to unnamed sources. Any chargesheet would set out investigators’ allegations, with the court determining whether they are established.
