Telangana CM Revanth Reddy will return from London after the Centre denied political clearance for his planned official US visit.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s planned official visit to the United States has been cancelled after the Ministry of External Affairs denied political clearance for the US leg of his overseas tour. The Chief Minister began a 10-day UK-US programme on August 20, with meetings planned at major universities and institutions.

The decision has forced a change in his schedule. Instead of flying from London to Boston, Revanth Reddy is expected to return to Hyderabad on August 23 after completing his UK engagements. His office is seeking clarity, while reports say the Centre’s communication stated that “clearance from political angle is denied.” No detailed public reason for the refusal has been announced.

The Telangana government had sought the required permissions for both the UK and US portions of the tour. While the UK visit received approval, the US leg did not get political clearance from the MEA. Official guidelines require political clearance as part of the approval process for foreign visits by Chief Ministers and state ministers.

The denial came after the delegation had already started its overseas programme, leading to a revision of Revanth Reddy’s itinerary. He was originally scheduled to travel to Boston and later attend engagements in New York before returning to Hyderabad at the end of August.

Revanth Reddy will now cut short his tour and return from London to Hyderabad on August 23. His planned US itinerary included visits linked to Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University and Virginia Tech.

The US programme was designed as part of Telangana’s international outreach, focusing on education, institutional partnerships, investment and possible agreements. The cancellation means the Chief Minister will not personally take part in those scheduled meetings.

Despite the setback, the Telangana Rising delegation has been asked to continue with the planned programme in the United States. Officials are expected to proceed with meetings involving universities, institutions and stakeholders.

The delegation will also continue discussions connected with proposed business and academic MoUs. This allows the state government to preserve its planned US outreach without the Chief Minister’s presence.

The Centre cleared the UK leg but withheld permission for the US visit. However, the exact basis for the MEA’s decision has not been publicly explained beyond the reference to political clearance. Reports available on Friday, August 21, did not specify any further official reason for denying the US leg.

With Revanth Reddy returning earlier than planned while his delegation continues in the US, the episode is likely to remain a political talking point in Telangana. The immediate impact is a shortened foreign tour for the Chief Minister and a US programme that will proceed without him.
