Temple-related appointments involving Chiranjeevi’s wife Surekha and daughter Sushmita have triggered debate about regional representation in the Telugu states.

Two temple-related appointments involving members of actor Chiranjeevi’s family have become the subject of political and social-media discussion in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The Telangana government nominated Chiranjeevi’s wife, Surekha Konidela, as a member of the Yadagirigutta Devasthanam Trust Board. Months later, the Andhra Pradesh government appointed his daughter, producer and stylist Sushmita Konidela, as a special invitee to the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Devasthanam in Vijayawada.

Critics have raised questions about the regional connection of the appointees, while supporters argue that Chiranjeevi and his family have longstanding cultural and professional links across both Telugu states. The debate has placed the actor’s public legacy and the selection process for temple bodies under renewed scrutiny.

The controversy began after the Telangana government constituted the Yadagirigutta Devasthanam Trust Board and included Surekha Konidela among its members.

Some political voices questioned the inclusion of a person identified with Andhra Pradesh on a Telangana temple board. The criticism drew responses from Chiranjeevi’s supporters, who argued that devotion and cultural contribution should not be restricted by state boundaries.

A similar discussion emerged after Sushmita Konidela received a temple-related role in Andhra Pradesh. Some social-media users questioned the appointment because she is associated with Hyderabad and Telangana.

The arguments reveal how regional identity continues to influence public debate more than a decade after Andhra Pradesh was divided. They also raise a broader question about whether appointments to major temple bodies should prioritise residence, administrative experience, community involvement or cultural prominence.

Surekha was nominated to the board of the Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple at Yadagirigutta when the Telangana government constituted the body in July 2026.

The board is headed by M Satyanarayana Reddy and includes nominated members as well as ex-officio government and temple officials. Its responsibilities are connected to the administration and development of one of Telangana’s most prominent pilgrimage destinations.

Public criticism focused largely on Surekha’s regional background rather than any allegation concerning her conduct. Supporters countered that the Konidela family has lived and worked in Hyderabad for decades and maintains strong ties with audiences and institutions throughout Telangana.

The dispute therefore became part of a wider political conversation about identity, inclusion and the criteria used to select members for religious trusts.

The Andhra Pradesh Endowments Department appointed Sushmita Konidela as a special invitee to the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Devasthanam Trust Board, popularly associated with the Kanaka Durga temple.

The appointment order was reportedly issued by Endowments Department Secretary Kannababu. In the role, Sushmita is expected to offer suggestions concerning temple development and administration.

Sushmita is Chiranjeevi’s elder daughter and has worked as a costume designer and film producer. Her appointment comes as other members of the extended Konidela family occupy significant public positions in Andhra Pradesh.

Chiranjeevi’s brother Pawan Kalyan serves as Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister, while another brother, Nagababu, is an MLC. These political connections have intensified public attention around Sushmita’s selection, even though she has not been appointed to an elected position.

Chiranjeevi’s film career spans nearly five decades and more than 150 movies. His work has generated business, employment and cultural influence across the Telugu-speaking regions that now form Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Before the state’s division, Hyderabad served as the shared capital and the centre of the Telugu film industry. Chiranjeevi’s career and public identity developed within that combined cultural landscape, making attempts to confine his family exclusively to one state difficult.

At the same time, government appointments to influential religious institutions deserve transparent selection criteria. Public scrutiny is legitimate when it focuses on qualifications, responsibilities and potential conflicts of interest. Regional attacks or personal insults, however, can distract from those substantive questions.

The two appointments demonstrate the continuing influence of the Konidela family across the Telugu states. They also highlight the need for governments to explain why individuals are selected, what duties they will perform and how their contributions will benefit devotees and temple administration.
