Mumbai, July 2: The death of 11-year-old Vihaan Srivastava in the Chembur school bus tragedy has left his family, neighbours, and school community in deep shock. The Class VI student died after a large tree fell on a school bus in Chembur while children were being dropped home after school.

Tree Falls On School Bus In Chembur

The tragic incident took place in Chembur’s Subhash Nagar area when a roadside tree collapsed on the school bus. Several children were trapped inside the vehicle after the impact, while residents and first responders rushed to rescue them.

Vihaan was among the children pulled out of the bus and taken to the hospital. However, he was later declared dead. Several other children sustained injuries in the incident and were taken for treatment.

Vihaan Was The Only Child Of His Parents

Vihaan was the only child of Juhi and Gaurav Srivastava. The family lives in Chembur’s Kukreja Residency, where neighbours described him as a cheerful, affectionate, and active child.

Residents said Vihaan enjoyed spending time with other children in the society’s play area and was known for his friendly nature. Family members and neighbours remembered him as a sports-loving child who was full of energy and innocence.

Funeral Held In Deonar

Vihaan’s last rites were held in Deonar, where family members, friends, neighbours and well-wishers gathered to support the grieving family. The emotional farewell reflected the deep pain felt by those who knew the young boy.

For his parents, the loss has been devastating. Neighbours said the tragedy has shaken the entire residential community, especially because the accident involved schoolchildren returning home after classes.

Injured Children Face Emotional Trauma

Apart from the physical injuries, families of the injured children are also worried about the psychological impact of the incident. Parents said children who witnessed the accident may need time, care, and emotional support to recover from the shock.

The tragedy has also raised concerns over the safety of school transport routes, especially during the monsoon season when weak or old trees can pose a danger.

Civic Safety Questions Raised

The incident has triggered public anger and questions over tree inspection and maintenance in Mumbai. Residents and local representatives have demanded accountability, saying dangerous trees should be identified and acted upon before such accidents occur.

The tragedy has also brought renewed focus on the need for regular tree audits, timely trimming, and stronger safety checks near schools, residential areas, and busy roads.

Need For Stronger Tree Audits

Mumbai often faces tree-fall incidents during heavy rains and strong winds. Experts and residents say civic authorities must treat tree maintenance as a public safety issue, not just a routine monsoon exercise.

The Chembur school bus tragedy is a painful reminder that delayed action can cost lives. For Vihaan’s family, no official step can undo the loss, but stronger preventive measures may help ensure that no other family suffers a similar tragedy.
