Digestive issues often trigger unnecessary anxiety, with many people worrying about gas, bloating, or irregular bowel movements. However, experts say not all unusual gut signs point to a problem—in fact, many of these “weird” signals are indicators of a healthy, well-functioning digestive system.

According to Saurabh Sethi, who has trained at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Harvard University, and Stanford University, several commonly misunderstood gut behaviours are actually signs of good health. Feeling hungry at the same time daily reflects a well-regulated circadian rhythm and strong gut-brain communication, while passing gas regularly indicates an active gut microbiome efficiently breaking down fibre.

Other signs include stomach growling when hungry, caused by the migrating motor complex—a natural process that clears the digestive tract between meals. Slightly loose stools after eating high-fibre foods are also normal, as fibre increases stool bulk and water content. These responses are part of healthy digestion and are not typically a cause for concern.

Experts also highlight that food aromas can trigger the cephalic phase response, a preparatory reaction that stimulates appetite. While the smell of food doesn’t directly raise blood sugar levels, it can lead to eating, which then increases glucose. This demonstrates the close connection between the gut and brain in regulating hunger and digestion.

As awareness around gut health grows, many people tend to overanalyse routine bodily changes. Doctors stress that understanding these natural signals can help reduce unnecessary worry. In most cases, occasional gas, bloating, or stomach sounds simply indicate that the digestive system is active and functioning as it should.
