Vijay Government to Begin First Tamil Nadu Assembly Session, Speaker Election on May 12

Tamil Nadu Assembly First Session Under CM Vijay Begins May 11, Speaker Election on May 12

Tamil Nadu’s newly formed government under Chief Minister Vijay is set to begin its legislative proceedings as the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly convenes for its first session on May 11. Newly elected MLAs will take the oath during the opening session, while elections for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are scheduled for May 12.

Vijay, who was sworn in on May 10 at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium, moved swiftly to implement key election promises. On his first day in office, he approved 200 units of free electricity for eligible households, ordered the formation of a special women’s safety force, and initiated anti-drug trafficking units across the state.

In his maiden address after taking oath, Vijay described his government as the beginning of “a new era,” emphasizing secularism, social justice, transparency, and accountability. He also asserted that there would be no parallel power centres, stating that he would take full responsibility for governance decisions.

The Chief Minister further announced plans to release a White Paper on the state’s financial condition, claiming a significant debt burden. His remarks drew political reactions, including from former Chief Minister M. K. Stalin.

Several national and regional leaders congratulated Vijay following his swearing-in, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Pawan Kalyan, and Naveen Patnaik. Film personalities such as Kamal Haasan, R. Madhavan, Sathyaraj, and Pooja Hegde also extended their wishes.

Vijay’s rise marks a significant political shift in Tamil Nadu, with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam leading the first non-DMK and non-AIADMK government in the state in decades.
