Aadhaar formats valid: UIDAI clarifies rule

UIDAI clarifies Aadhaar validity

The Unique Identification Authority of India has clarified that all official forms of Aadhaar carry the same validity. This means Aadhaar Letter, e-Aadhaar, Aadhaar PVC Card, and Aadhaar available through the Aadhaar App can all be used as valid identity proof wherever Aadhaar is accepted.

The clarification is important because many users still believe that only the printed Aadhaar card or PVC version is acceptable at banks, offices, travel counters or government service centres. UIDAI has made it clear that organisations should not reject one valid format simply because another version is preferred.

All formats carry equal value

According to UIDAI, Aadhaar Letter, e-Aadhaar PDF, PVC Card, and the Aadhaar App version are official formats. People can choose whichever option is easier for them to carry or present. For many users, the digital version is more convenient, especially while travelling or accessing services on short notice.

The Aadhaar PVC Card remains a compact physical option, while e-Aadhaar helps users download a digitally signed copy. The Aadhaar App allows users to keep Aadhaar details on their phone without depending on a paper document.

QR code verification advised

UIDAI has also asked service providers and institutions to verify Aadhaar through the secure QR code instead of checking only printed details. The QR code carries digitally signed information and helps confirm whether the Aadhaar document is genuine.

This step matters because fake or edited Aadhaar copies can create problems during identity checks. QR code scanning makes verification quicker and safer for banks, employers, government offices, educational institutions and other organisations.

What users should know

Aadhaar holders do not need to panic or replace their existing document just because they do not have a PVC card. Any official Aadhaar format is valid. The bigger issue is authenticity, and that is why QR code verification is being encouraged.

The practical takeaway is simple: carry any valid Aadhaar format, but make sure it is official and verifiable. Organisations should also stop insisting on only one format when UIDAI recognises all official versions equally.
