Karnataka MLC Polls: Resort Politics Returns As Congress Tries To Prevent Cross-Voting

Karnataka politics is once again seeing the return of resort politics as the ruling Congress moves to keep its MLAs together ahead of the June 18 Legislative Council elections.

The move comes at a time when the contest for seven Council seats has become tighter than expected. With eight candidates in the fray for seven seats, cross-voting has emerged as the biggest concern for political parties, especially in the race for the final seat.

According to party sources, Congress MLAs are expected to be moved to a resort near Bengaluru after the Congress Legislature Party meeting on June 16. The legislators are likely to remain there until polling day, before being taken directly to the Assembly to cast their votes.

Congress Takes Precaution Ahead Of MLC Polls

The Congress is taking extra precautions to prevent any possible cross-voting or alleged poaching attempts by rival parties. The party does not want to take chances in a contest where even a few votes can change the result.

The Legislative Council election is being held for seven seats. Congress has fielded five candidates, while the BJP and JD(S) have also entered the contest. The ruling party is comfortably placed to win a few seats, but the final seat has turned into a closely watched battle.

In such elections, MLAs vote to elect members to the Legislative Council. Since the voting strength of each party matters, parties often try to keep their legislators together until polling is completed.

Seventh Seat Becomes Main Battle

The main political fight is now around the seventh and final seat. Congress candidate Vinay Karthik Prakash and JD(S) candidate Govindaraju are expected to be in a direct contest for this seat.

The Karnataka Assembly currently has 222 members, with two vacancies. Each candidate needs 28 votes to secure victory. Based on present numbers, Congress is expected to win four seats without much difficulty, while the BJP is likely to win two seats.

However, the final seat is not fully secured for any side. This is why cross-voting, surplus votes, and support from smaller groups or rival camp legislators could become important.

Why Resort Politics Matters In Karnataka

Resort politics is not new to Karnataka. Over the years, political parties in the state have often moved MLAs to resorts during close elections, trust votes, or leadership crises. The aim is usually to prevent rival parties from contacting legislators or influencing their voting decisions.

This time, the Congress appears to be following the same strategy to ensure that its MLAs remain united until the Council election is completed.

The party is also expected to brief its legislators on the voting process. In Council elections, even a small mistake while marking the ballot can make a vote invalid. This makes coordination and training important for parties in a close contest.

BJP-JD(S) Strategy Under Watch

The BJP and JD(S) are also closely watching the numbers. The JD(S) candidate’s chances could depend on how the opposition camp manages its votes and whether it can attract support beyond its own strength.

For Congress, winning the fifth seat would be important to show control over its legislative numbers. For the JD(S), winning the final seat would be a major political boost. For the BJP, the election is also an opportunity to test the ruling party’s internal unity.

The contest has therefore become more than a routine Council election. It is now being seen as a test of political management, party discipline, and floor strategy in Karnataka.

Congress Faces Numbers Test

The June 18 election will show whether Congress can keep its MLAs together and prevent any surprise voting pattern. The party has a clear numerical advantage, but the contest for the last seat has forced it to stay alert.

As the polling day approaches, all eyes will be on whether the resort strategy helps Congress avoid cross-voting and secure its target in the Karnataka Legislative Council polls.

The result of the final seat could also send a larger political message about the balance of power between Congress, BJP and JD(S) in the state.
