Mamata Meeting Called Off As TMC Faces Fresh Political Heat
A key Trinamool Congress meeting at Mamata Banerjee’s Kalighat residence was called off after nearly 60 of the party’s 80 MLAs stayed away, creating a fresh political talking point in West Bengal.
Low Turnout Raises Questions
The Trinamool Congress faced an uncomfortable moment after only around 20 MLAs reached Mamata Banerjee’s residence for a scheduled meeting of legislators. The gathering was planned soon after the reported attack on Abhishek Banerjee, making the poor turnout more politically sensitive. The absence of most MLAs has raised questions about the party’s internal coordination at a time when TMC is preparing to hit the streets.
TMC Defends Its MLAs
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said the MLAs were not absent without reason. According to him, several legislators were busy organising local protests, helping party workers, and responding to the tense ground situation after alleged attacks on Abhishek Banerjee, MP Kalyan Banerjee, and TMC workers.
Mamata Plans Street Protest
The party has now announced block-level and ward-level rallies, followed by a symbolic sit-in at Rani Rashmoni Road in Kolkata. Mamata Banerjee is expected to lead the protest as TMC tries to turn the attack row and post-poll violence allegations into a larger political campaign.
